Some people just require one-on-one experience with reality. Let it go, E. Give her a final message and tell her to find someone else to discuss it with. She'll either sink or swim.

And I'm with Carla on the family bit. In fact, that's the first thing that went through my mind when I read that. I totally enjoy downhome hospitality and family time. Except if I have to go to my in-laws'.

Interesting. I also wonder what she is coming from (not in terms of living with the inlaws and complaining about eating their food - I mean really).

I mean in terms of accepting what she had not expected (from him), which she obviously does not like and just saying hey...well i'm here now.

Ok, my own private vent here - one I don't indulge in often . . .

I am frustrated with this own VJ taking so long! Over on the citizenship forum someone who got married September 2004 just had their citizenship test and will receive their oath in 2 weeks. I am happy for them, but heck, we got married in June, 2004, have applied for every single step along the way the soonest that we could apply and I can't even apply for my citizenship until the end of February, 2009, let alone already have it and be able to vote in this upcoming election. These people started the process a year after us and are going to finished it at least 2 years before we are. USCIS sucks big time - sure wish we could end up on the fast moving path for at least ONE part of this process! Big Sigh - so back to waiting for I-751 which will probably be adjudicated sometime NEXT Spring.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Probably faster because they were cr-1 or ir-1. I know as a cr-1'ers i could apply 3 yrs from the date I activated my CR-1 (minus the 90 days) at the POE. With k1'ers when can u first apply? is it after AOS? There are + and - of each visa.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Kathryn, do you or your SO have any children? I don't know if that would have a significant effect or not, but maybe kids (i.e. dependents) would slow down the process.

I know exactly how you feel. I got married in July 2002. Sent AOS application in August 2002. I then had my AOS interview in December 2002. Well I sort of got approved but couldn't get the official approval until the fingerprint checks had cleared. I had to be fingerprinted a total of three times because the prints were not coming out. It wasn't until July 2004 that I got approved for the 2 year residency. I had made inquiries in the 18 months just to be told basically to hang in there. If truth be told I think I got stuck on the backburner and then my file was discovered during "spring cleaning." When I got my approval the date was after the 2 year mark of my anniversary. I went in to our local office and pointed that out only to be told that they didn't have to issue me the 10 year card as there was nothing clarified in writing that that was how it was to be. When it was time to remove conditions, I sent my application, fees, etc in to Nebraska. I then get everything sent back to me, cheque included with them stating that I was supposed to have gotten the 10 year card back in July 2004 and I was issued a 10 year card. I sent my application in for citizenship near the end of July 2007 to Nebraska. In early November they claimed I owed more in fees. I then sent a copy of my receipt from USPS showing that my package had been received by their office before the new fee deadline. I then get a letter from them stating that I didn't owe the fees. I figured I wouldn't get a notice from my local office for the fingerprinting until at the earliest November 2008 so was shocked to receive a letter in late July to come for fingerprinting on August 11. Of course problems once again with the fingerprinting so I could foresee having to come back for fingerprinting in the future once again. Surprise! A letter in yesterday's mail stating my citizenship interview/testing will be September 29th.

Kathryn, you rarely post anything negative or even with the slightest annoyance, so reading this, I can tell that it's wearing on you. I think its absolutely ridiculous the way applications are processed north of the border. It seems like there's no rhyme or reason for it - just whatever seems to fall across their desk. And to see other people have their stuff done, when they're not next in line is so aggravating. The way the system runs is so counterintuitive sometimes - but I guess that because we're operating on logic and they're operating on some magic roulette wheel that stops on some applications and not others.

Sorry that you're both still in limbo (F)

I have no kids and my step daughter is in her late 30s and hasn't lived with Joe since she was 2 years old. We applied June 16, 2003 for the I-129f which was approved the last day of December, 2003. The K-1 was approved March 30, 2004. I had to give a month's notice at work, so we moved to the US May 6, 2004, married June 19 (the first date my maid of honour was available), applied mid July (don't recall the exact date now- about 3 weeks later) for AOS, did biometrics the end of August, 2004, was transferred to CSC September 30, 2005 (yep more than a full year later), re-did biometrics early February, 2006 (because the first had expired), AOS approved May 26, 2006. Filed I-751 February 28, 2008, transferred to VSC March 18, biometrics April 19 - and still waiting.

No kids, no RFE's, no explanations. And thanks for the sympathy, guys; it helps. But it doesn't help seeing people who submitted their I-751s to CSC 2 months after we submitted to TSC (and transferred to VSC) getting approved - we could have been approved by CSC twice now in the time since we submitted it. And we never received the NOA either, even though they promised to resend it. Grrr (gee, I think I can find all sorts of things to gripe about if I really put my mind to it, hehehe)!
