The US do not have a unified driver's license system. You need to look up your state's DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) and go from there.

In Pennsylvania, you need to take a theoretical computer test prior to being allowed to get a learner's permit. Then you can take the road test.

There is a $31 fee for the whole thing and includes the computer test, deliverance of a learner's permit, the road test (3 tries), and deliverance of the final driver's license card.

Also, Pennsylvania allows you to transfer your French or German license without needing to take the tests, but only if you have a French or German license. I'm from Switzerland and had to retake the test.

Like I said, all states have different rules, so check our own state out.

I see you are in CA. You need a green card or valid EAD to get a DL. You will need to take both a written & driving test.

More here:

Oh no LOL

I really hate this. I was hoping only a written test.

Thank you for your answer. I just went to the link you gave me and took a sample test.

I am sometimes having a hard time to understand the questions.

The driving test is indeed easy. Just make sure you can parallel park well (be a foot at most from the curb when you're done maneuvering).

Make actual, full stops at stop signs (like the ones you're supposed to do but never ever do outside of the driver's test), respect the speed limit, use your turn signals, don't run over the old lady, etc.

In the US the road test is irresponsibly easy most of the time. You just drive around the block in a semi-residential area for 10 minutes and you're done. I remember my test back in Europe taking 30+ minutes and involving all sorts of traffic conditions (highway, center city, suburban, country side, ...)

Ok I feel better now.

I never forget in Denmark how much this driving test took my nightsleep several days before. I was 18 back then and have always been so happy that this was over for good.

But here I am again in same position after 30 years LOL I can't believe this

In CA you don't have to parallel park.

Ok that sounds good.

I will go to DMV and get this book

You might check the website for the book too...many have them online and would save you a trip to the DMV if it isn't convenient.

I recommend you set up appointments for the tests, it will certainly shorten the waiting time. Good luck
