Next thing you know they will be teaching 6-7 year olds about "alternitive" lifstyles. Oh wait they are doing that too. Gotta love public education.

Huh?

They had some potluck deal at local school here last year.

Wow.

Girls in Middle School are being put on birth control pills? That means there's evidence these kids are having sex. Why didn't this happen when I was in Middle School?

Seriously... if someone is going to engage in sexual activity, it's probably better off if they're protected. Someone who is determined to have sex will have it and no amount of prevention will deter them. So instead of taking away their options to keep them "safe" we might as well give them choices on how to protect themselves.

The birth control pill is a good idea, but only for monogamous couples. As someone else on here already said, it only keeps pregnancy from occurring, and while that's important, it does nothing to prevent STD infections. If someone is having sex with more than one partner, I'd recommend a barrier method form of birth control (i.e. male or female condom) since it'll protect against pregnancy and STD infections. For the truly paranoid, the birth control pill can be used in conjunction with a barrier method.

How long is "monogamy" when you're a teenager? A semester at most? When the pill was invented, pregnancy rates dropped but STD infections increased. I'm not opposed to distributing condoms in school, but the pill concerns me for this reason, as well as the fact that the pill is not a safe option for many women. I'd be afraid it could be overprescribed or used incorrectly (double- or triple-dosing when a day or two is missed, for example).

In preventing pregnancy, condoms have about a 7% failure rate with perfect use. Birth control pills are in the 1-2% range. Patch and shot are slightly lower, but have some side effect issues. The best option is probably a hormone implant (.1% failure rate), but its expensive and doesn't work well with all people. So in preventing pregnancy and STD's its best to use condoms with another form of birth control.

So let me guess this straight. Talking about religion or spirituality, in schools, is WRONG and has absolutely no place in schools but anything to do with sex is a okay.

Why not provide rooms for teenagers to ###### in schools. Because hey the do it anyway right. Create a new ###### 101 class so they can learn new positions.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Actually the Mirena IUD has the lowest failure rate but it should only be used in women who have had children and are in a stable relationship.

Parental permission required

That's the key... while I'd be troubled if I had 13 yr. old who was sexually active, I'd rather she/he has access to protection than nothing at all.

There is something to be said for seperating the boys from the girls in school.

I can't see anything right about birth control for 11-13 year olds. That's just wrong on all levels. Whoever thinks he can touch my little girl in that age range better had come to terms to living the rest of his days w/o a fcuking ####### - if he gets to live at all that is...

I'm with Mags 100% on this issue.

You can't forbid them and be heard, you can't lock them up, might as well talk to them and make sure they're safe, if they're giving out pills it's 'cus they are having young girls pregnant. Doing what they can to prevent this is better than turning a blind eye to the whole situation.

Btw, separating boys from girls at school wouldn't solve the situation either, they'd have sex after school, on weekends, etc. To address this situation would involved changing the content of television and other media, to revert the minds of children, who are maturing earlier these days.

The cervical cancer vaccine is a great thing, really.

Probably because this is one school (even in the article they admit that this is extremely uncommon), while the Creationist folks have tried to import their b/s in science curriculums state/nationwide. In perspective this isn't anything to get carried away over.
