Why would you do that?? You have to share every aspect of your marriage with USCIS and dont forget the FBI, they have the right to ask you any questions they feel would help them make a desission about your marriage, including some very personal questions... so do you think that blacking out a few account # is going to keep things private?.... I think it would just make them think you are trying to hide something...

If you are worried about identity theft... then dont they have all the info they would need to take over your identity.... SSN, date of birth, place of birth, copies of your birth certificate and marriage certificate, your current address, all your addresses for the last 5 years or more, your parents names and dates of birth and so on......

I'm sending our joint checking account statements as proof for the I-751 . Should I cover any private information, such as account numbers?

mdesai,

I'm with you on this - should we ever need to send this kind of information you can rest assured the account numbers, and even account balances/transactions will be blacked out. (It is not so much because am worried about privacy/identity-theft issues, its just none of their business.)

If you pay by personal check they will get the number anyway.

I figure it is the government, they probably already have the information anyway

Who is "it"?

I have spent some time working very closely with an IT vendor that does a lot of work for USCIS. They are not the government, even though the government deems it wise to send them sensitive documents which they then proceed to treat with the utmost lack of care and respect.

Trust the government, if you must. Just don't trust the undereducated idiots they hire.

I have worked directly with the government and government contractors for the past 35 years. "it" is the government! Things are done a certain way and heaven forbid if you should try to change it. :P

My worries would be my package getting lost in the mail and someone opening it, but then again, my SSN and other important info that can't be blacked out would be there so what's the point, really?

I did black out private stuff in letters and mails from my I-129F initial package.
