Hello,

I have been searching on the internet but have come up with mixed answers. Has anyone in California had jury duty or know if employers are supposed to pay their employees for their time? I had to go in for one day and in the end the case wasn't ready to go to trial. I am not on salary as I am a part time employee but I am wondering if I should be compensated for the hours that I was at jury duty?

Anyone?

Thanks,

Sarah

Depends on your employer. Large companies generally pay salaried employees full pay for jury duty. My employer also pays hourly employees 8 hours a day for jury duty. Ask your HR department, but my guess, the answer will be no.

I agree that it is typically based on the size of the company. If you are a part time employee your chances, IMO, of getting paid for jury duty, are even more slim.

Although, the $40 odd the court gives you will go a long way for earnings missed while completing your civic duty. :jest:

When I did jury duty in CA (Sacramento County), I was paid $5 dollars a day by the county plus so much per mile. I had to turn over the $5 a day to my employer (federal govt), and they paid my full salary.

Whether you get paid or not is up to the company policies of your employer...I would tend to doubt it for a part time employee.

I finally got rid of the never ending money drain. I called the plumber, and got the problem fixed. I wish her the best.

Yep, depends on the employer. Most will pay the difference between your salary and what you get for JD. I work for the county now and the county completely supports jury duty service.

A guy that worked for me before was on jury duty for seven months. It made the manager mad that he didn't try to get out of it but I think that was his intention :P

Well apparently as a part time employee my time for jury duty will not be compensated. We also have a policy in our office that if it's your birthday you get a paid day off. I took my birthday off and just now found out that part time employees don't get paid birthdays! Gosh!

I haven't known any companies that provide the same benefits to part-time employees as they provide to full-time (vacation time, insurance, etc). There could be some out there but I can't imagine there would be very many.

Most companies I have known like part-time because they don't have to do a lot of things that is required for full-time. My wife worked at a large chain store part-time as are most of the employees there and none had any medical benefits, as an example.
