COVINGTON, Ga. - A man pleaded guilty Monday to running down two women and three children in a random attack in the parking lot of a McDonald's restaurant, killing a 2-year-old, and was sentenced to life in prison.

Lanny Perry Barnes, 47, admitted running over the five in his car in a random attack May 23, 2006, in Covington, an eastern Atlanta suburb. He pleaded guilty to murder and other charges.

Police said Barnes' car struck the five, hit the restaurant, then backed up and hit the victims again. Witnesses said they saw Barnes laughing behind the wheel.

Avery Nicole King of North Carolina died of her injuries. Her mother, Anita King, and Covington residents Stephanie Casola and her two sons, Isaac and Jake, recovered from their injuries.

Barnes had been charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated battery and aggravated assault.

At the time, Barnes' mother said her son had had depression for years. Barnes also has leukemia and is due for a bone marrow transplant soon.

So... he hit five people and then smacked his car into the side of a McDonald's (I refuse to call that a "restaurant"), backed up and hit those very same people again? Wow. That's one very deranged (and determined) whackjob there.

He's got a pretty tough car too. Presumably, he was going fairly fast in order to kill those five when hitting them, so if he bashed his car into the McDonald's as well, he'd have hit at least six blunt objects with is car. That has to put some "wear and tear" on the vehicle.

Corporal punishment would be quite useful in this case..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Another example of how the mental health system is failing both US society and those who suffer from severe mental health issues.

I have to wonder as to the reasoning that corporal punishment would be somehow make things better in this, or any other instance, it isn't going to prevent such a thing from happening again. By all accounts this person was extremely unstable prior to this incident (it seems likely he thought he was going to die himself anyway, so a fear of physical punishment wasn't exactly going to do much).

Nothing will bring back the life of the 2 year old though, so very, very sad.

So now that he has been sentenced and under the care of the Prison System..... let me guess... we pick up the tab for his bone marrow transplant.

What do you propose? Denying health care to prisoners? It might be 'poetic' justice to you, but really, descending to this level of human indecency does not bring about justice.

Well, I think something is pretty sick and twisted when the worst of society gets access to healthcare and those who're working -- and presumably not committing criminal acts -- may have to go without it because they can't afford it. Something isn't right there.

If I had to choose, I'd rip healthcare away from the prisoners and give it to the men, women and children who haven't murdered, raped, beaten, tortured or done some other horrible thing to someone else.

Universal health care would take care of that little injustice.

The action you suggest would make the US criminal justice system on a par with say, the justice system in China. Is that your aim?
