Cashiers check or money order?

Hey everyone,

Today I walked in the bank asking for a Money Order and they told me that they didn't offer them and said I needed to go to a gas station or grocery store. However they were able and willing to give me a Cashiers check.

I know on the Instructions given from USCIS they ask that it come from a bank, so what do I do? Should I look for another bank that may offer money orders? Or can I just do the cashiers check.

Maybe it would not matter if I got a Money Order from the grocery store?

Thanks for the help.

Personal check is fine by USCIS, you can easily see if the check gets cashed, and with most banks can get scans of the check to see case number.

Cashiers check is a tremendous waste of $$, if you do not have a personal checking account then use a money order, I would use one from the USPS since it is drawn on the federal reserve bank and is just as good as CASH.

Great, in that case I will just get one there at the USPS while I am sending the documents.

Heh Dan. Have you or anyone ever heard of someone using a friends personal check ?

I'd be afraid to but a check is a check. At least they would have a chance of get the WAC or whatever number if they don't have their own checking account. Guess it would be aconsidered a second party check.

I've never seen this pop up!

A personal check is preferrable. I would only use a money order if you don't have a checking account. I would even prefer dear old Dad wrote the check and give him the money. It allows you to know that your package was received, opened, and the check cashed, instead of waiting for something in the mail that may take a couple months.

So its okay even if I have my Dad fill out the check? So it doesn't have to be in my name? Shoot, that could make things a lot easier in that case. I was just thinking that could cause issues.

Her Dad, family member or stranger might possibly cause a problem but it would be pretty obscure. They're just looking for the fee and depositing the check. On your end, it is a huge stress saver to have used a personal check. It would even be worth opening a checking account, IMO.

I do have a checking account just no checks. So I will go ahead and use my Dad's, that way the Check can be tracked at we can know when it goes through. So there is no way to track the money order right?

They can be tracked but it is much more difficult and getting an image of the endorsement with case number would be even more difficult, if possible at all.

You should use a personal check. Then you can see when it clears and maybe get the receipt number off the back since there is still a backlog with NOA1s. I think it's probably a waste of money to pay for a cashier's check but if you're dead set on a money order, you can get one at the post office which I think would be preferable to a grocery store.

I don't know. I went to the bank, asked for a money order and got a cashier's check. This country is confusing. Everything is done so differently. I assumed a cashier's check was fine since that's what the bank gave me.

I HATE miles, gallons, pints, words spelled without u's, and all that other jazz...
