I've worked in the financial sector for years. Forms W8's are commonly used forms of documentation for opening bank accounts. Even foreign limited partnerships and corporations routinely use Form W8-BEN for opening/maintaining their accounts and obtaining cash management or global clearing services in the US. Form W9 is commonly used for US companies (their tax ID figures on this form). The only difference is that Form W-8BEN expires after 3 years and has to be renewed, when Form W9 doesn't.

it seems that legal immigrants trying to do things legally have more issues than illegal ones. You could have gone to get an illegal SSN, which would have saved you a lot of time and aggravation

I used to live here as illegal immigrant and never had even half of problems as I am having now being fully legal.
