Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on the following issue? I have a full British Driver's Licence, but as I'm over here on a CR1 do I have to obtain a learner's permit? I would like to practice driving on one of my in-laws car (which they have third party insurance on), but am unsure whether I can do so on my British Licence or if I have to get a Learner's Permit instead. According to the DMV website, I will be considered a Colorado Resident if I have lived in the State longer than 90 days or have a job. I've only lived here for 3 weeks, and although I have a couple of good job leads, they require a Driver's Licence so I hope to take the test in a few weeks time, and then get a job after I've done the test.

http://driversed.com/dmv/colorado-foreign-drivers.aspx That's one of the links I got the info from, which is the same as in the Colorado DMV handbook.

Anyhow, I just wanted to check that it was okay for me to drive for the moment using my British licence, before I get out on the road over here

I am in Colorado and when I tried to get on Hubbys insurance, they said I needed a US license. I asked a friend of ours (who is a police officer) to check this out for me and he was surprised to find out that my UK license was not valid once I was a resident (which I think is after 3 months of living in the State).

So I had to get a learners permit by taking the written test (which was really easy) then the same afternoon I took my road test (which was equally easy) and got my Colorado license.

Hope this helps.

Jen

Edited to add......I am pretty sure you are supposed to surrender your UK license, but I was not asked to...never told anyone I had one! It was too hard to get to give it up!
