Does anyone know if suffering from poliomyelitis as a young child is going to be a problem during the medical exam? Also I need to have gallbladder surgery to relieve prolonged gallstone problems. Should I have the required surgery before or after my medical exam and can this cause my k1 visa to be denied?

I am not positive what the requirements for medical are but I think if it is something that does not hinder you from working it is okay and if it is not something contagious or auto immune from what I have been seeing.

I am not positive what the requirements for medical are but I think if it is something that does not hinder you from working it is okay and if it is not something contagious or auto immune from what I have been seeing.

Having had polio isn't going to be a problem since it's not contagious. As to your gall bladder surgery, I see no problem. My wife just had the radioactive iodine treatment for her thyroid 3 months ago and it was not an issue at the medical. Either way, get your surgery done before you emigrate. It's much less expensive there.

Autoimmune disorders are conditions in which a person's immune system attacks the body's own cells, causing tissue destruction. This is where the immune system is too strong.

I think the poster was referring to conditions like Human Immunodeficiency Virus AutoImmune Distress Syndrone (HIVAIDS) in which the immune system cannot protect the body and is contagious through some types of contact.

My husband has Sickle Cell Disease with an episode requiring hospitalization not long before the medical. It did not effect a thing.

They are looking for contagious diseases. They will give you a blood test looking for HIV and an xray looking for TB, if they don't like what they see on the xray, they will give you additional tests for TB.

Hello Jessica. Childhood diseases such as Poliomyelitis will not hinder an applicant to be granted a visa. Under The Technical Instructions for Medical Examinations those that need Required Evaluations are the following:

A. Communicable Diseases of Public Significance

1. Infectious Tuberculosis
2. HIV
3. Syphilis
4. Other Sexually Transmitted Diseases: Chancroid, Gonorrhea, Granuloma Inguinale, Lymphogranuloma Venereum
5. Hansen's Disease/ Leprosy

B. Physical and Mental Disorders with associated harmful behaviors

C. Other Physical, Social or Mental Disability, Diseases or Disability

Regarding your planned elective surgery for your Gallstones: This will also not cause denial of your petition. It maybe advisable to have it done there since it will be less expensive. But if you can have the medical insurance when you get here in the U.S. then you may opt to postpone your operation and just have it done here. But if you decide to have it done there then what you will need is just a Medical Certification from your Surgeon indicating the Diagnosis and the Surgical Procedure done (Cholecystectomy or Laparoscopy-Chole).

Panel Physicians at SLEC will just ask you about previous disease/hospitalizations. And if you have surgery before and have some scars on your body, they may ask more info about it and if you have a medical certificate, then that will suffice.

I believe that Helen is right that having polio when you were a kid should not be a ground for visa denial. I also had polio 26 years ago and it did not stop me from living a normal life and wanting to have a family of my own. As of the moment I am waiting for my K1 packet since our petition was approved a month ago. I believe it should be soon. Did you have vaccination after you had the disease? I talked to a polio researcher online and he told me the same thing what Helen shared in this post. However, it is best to get the vaccination for polio in 3 shots in order to be completely covered from the disease. The way I understand that having polio in the past won’t make us immune to the disease. This means that if you did not have the vaccine, you must get one because we are still susceptible to get the virus & contract polio the second time. I will have my first vaccination within the week.
