Unfortunately, tho, that's bollocks. I work with people with mental illness. I train people to staff houses where they live. We run a class about stigma and the labels that we place on other people. Names do hurt.

I don't connect the word retarded with legitimate disabilities. I think it's an insult and that's the "new" definition of the word. I think words take on a life and change as things progress. I've worked with educational policies surrounding disabled individuals for 10 years and honestly, we don't see the word retarded used to describe disabilities in our clients (even from medical practitioners who tend to be the last to join in progress).
