I was wondering when or what is involved for me to get a Social security number?

For those who say you can get and EAD stamp at JFK airport. how would I go about doing that? I'm coming from Ottawa, and I usually go threw immigration there

Any suggestions?

With a K1 visa, you can apply for an SSN after entering the US.

Most people say to wait a few weeks after your return to make sure your info is in the system and then you can go ahead and apply.

Carles n Sue,

Once in the US - 10 to 14 days after entering - you can apply for a Social Security Card - it's pretty simple form, bring passport and birth certificate. If all goes well, a couple of weeks later you'll have it in the mail.

If you simply must have the temporary EAD stamp that you can get at JFK - fly in (making it your POE) and get it when you go through immigrations there- I've yet to read a story of anyone really making much use of it, but as said, if you simply must have it - that's how you get it. (It's only good for 90 days - we got it, but we just concentrated on getting married, setting up a home and filing AOS.)

Keep in mind that the EAD stamp becomes invalid as soon as you apply for AOS, I believe...either that, or when you marry, one of the two.

I took Claudeth to the social security office two weeks after she arrived and she received her card a week later.

Since you will be going through an international airport in Canada, you already know that you will be going through the PFI before getting on the flight and not through JFK as a POE. HOWEVER, some people have reported getting the temp EAD stamp while going through a PFI -- it can't hurt to ask for it. I personally didn't bother worrying about getting the temp stamp, it didn't seem worth it to me. I applied for the EAD later.
