 maybe people need to look in the drive way, on the tv stand, in the toy box........to see why the dollar is dumping. :ranting:

Funny thing is, my wife's two polo shirts that she bought in Manila and brought with her to the states have "Made in USA" printed on the inside tag. I suspect we are manufacturing plenty and exporting most for over-seas consumption. Kind of like the Chinese thinking the Buick is a luxury car!

This is very frustrating for OFW's and pinoy's with export business. Basic commodities there are getting higher too. I guess we need to send a little more :(

Even with the falling dollar it is still cheaper in the RP for retirees

Exactly. The only thing that concerns me about this calculation is the cost of healthcare once there. At least in America we'd have some form of insurance to ease the burden. In the RP, you gotta pay cash for everything, and often the medicine is MORE expensive than in the US. I could see healthcare eating-up whatever cost-of-living savings there are.

It does seem to be considerably cheaper but everything is cash and carry. It is good if you are ex military, you can use the facilities in Manila.

Jasman,

Can you give me more info on the facilities in Manila that ex-military can use? Thanks.

My friend used to go up there every few months for meds, he has full disability from the Army. I believe the clinic is in the U.S. embassy. Seeing that he and I aren't currently speaking to one another I can't ask him.

The dollar has gone down steadily against the Nepalese rupee - when I first visited Nepal in 2001 immeditately following the royal family massacre it was $1=75 NRs, last year it was 70 NRs, this past June it was 65 and lately I have seen it as low as 61...

When you consider how unstable the Nepalese government has been in this same time period it is really scary...

Thank you, Jasman

My ex-friend lived there for four years and visited the clinic on the average of every three months during that period and thought it was a good facility.

When I lived there (last year), it took 6 months to get an appointment

Six months, sounds about like the wait for an appointment for a VA facility in Denver. Maybe no better, no worse than in America. Sad state of affairs if that is true. So thankful my father had health insurance with subsequent jobs that he never had to rely exclusively on the VA.
