Can we have a philosophical (not religious) talk about religion?

It is a problem between there being an all-powerful God and him letting bad things happen on our earth.......... eg. either he isn't all-powerful and lets bad things happen or he is all-powerful and isn't all good.

So why did God let 911 happen? Is he really not all-powerful or is he evil?

God gave us free will. Free will is absolute otherwise it wouldn't be free will.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senator Barack Obama
Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

You are a Philosophy major? Did you not read Descartes? Kiekergaard? Wittgenstein? Some of the greatest philosophers believed in God.

Besides missing the point of this (really silly) thread, you're also wrong. (Ok, you were 3 months ago.) Kierkegaard didn't believe in God. He just wanted you poor saps to believe in one. And Wittgenstein's ideas about God certainly weren't anything like yours, Steven.

PS, I don't care about philosophical questions, just don't like it when people claim great philosophers would have agreed with their religious views. Some would have, and some would have thought you were an idiot. That's just the way it is.

God gave us free will. Free will is absolute otherwise it wouldn't be free will.

So that means there is no point praying for god's protection like 90% of the people in the twin towers did every day or week, because god has given free will to mr atta.

Big G sits back and says let em burn - I would rather do that than intervene he says. Adam ate the apple and mr atta is a bad guy so as a collective punishment you can all burn including those who wear the knees out of their pants praying to me all the time

Thats not very nice G and you should re-evaluate

and while you are at it, intelligently re-create my prostate

I think he should resign or be impeached... who would take over ? They couldn't do a worse job so it doesn't matter.

Let's draw lots and take turns. In my first term in the job I would magic money out of thin air and give everyone universal health care and abolish tax and make everyone the same colour - black first year and white the next with all shades in between each month. As soon as i did that, everyone would start praying to me so that would be the end of diverse religions.

So nobody is short of money or healthcare and we are all the same colour and in the same church !

Anybody who wants to start a war is magicked into a world one trench for a week in january 1917 to re-evaluate

Vote alan for God - I have a program !

It's a good job the present big G is not paid by results or he would have no bonus and be in danger of having his cloud or manger repossessed

No more impregnating married virgins either - all that has to stop- cut out the middle woman and let the kid be found in a dumpster like the real lowly born are... a lot of new borns in chicago would see a nice manger full of kings and donkeys and 3 parents as the lap of luxury. 3 parents - jeez a lot of em don't get one !

Course we can't blame G for the dumpster kid because adam did bite that apple so it's not G's fault and he can't intervene - I suppose he feels sorry for the new born kid but... well the kid has never prayed or tithed so he has no benefit entitlement....

Well, that might be your definition of a better life for everyone, but that's the point, not everyone is going to agree with you and that's somewhat the point of absolute free will. Personally, I don't subscribe to any organised religion though, so I don't expect fairness.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

:) Alex, I didn't say specifically that Kierkegaard believed in God, but what he had to say is relevant to Logres preposition which is rooted in logic. Logres was trying to explain faith in a God through logic, something that Kierkegaard would say is 'beyond reason.'

Regardless of what ideas I share or don't share with some of the greatest contemporary philosophers about God, what I said was true - many of them in fact believed in a God or Higher Power. Logres was trying to make the argument that because faith in God is not logical, it can be argued as nonexistent...and that is his error. Even Kierkegaard points that out.

So because god's existence cannot be disproved, he may well exist ?

So any way-out notion I can come up with that cannot be disproved should be given credence as a 'possible'

That leads to scientology and all the aliens and volcanos - once you shrug and say anything is possible and everything is equally likely, some guy will sell you a load of rubbish

Just a thought - who's DNA did jesus have ? If god does not have dna then he must have been 100% Mary's as he was totally human as the church keeps telling us.

In that case, was Jesus the first clone ? If he had god's DNA then did god share 99% of his DNA with chimpanzees like us ?

If so - why ? If not then jesus could not have been human or he was a clone of mary

As the statistics show that the first clone died in his early thirties, so should we do more research before adopting (pardon the word) this method for humans ?

unshakel people's eyes and remove this handed down faith which is wasting believer's sabaths and allowing ministers to wear shiny suites and drive rolls royces and interfere with parishoners little boys. These devout people should get real - they could be motorcycling instead..

Was tarzan a christian ? If nobody had told us all this fairy tale stuff then it wouldnt exist...
