One of my colleagues has a son who locked his grandma out of the house when she went to get the mail and got naked in the middle of the floor and played with his poo.

Kids try your patience sometimes, don't they?!

I hope everyone and your babies are doing well. We have been cold and virus central this past few weeks. Blech! Last week I took Iseul to the doctor for a cold (which Haneul also had). This morning I took Haneul to the doctor for a 104 degree fever (and Iseul has now developed a fever). Of course, the only reason to really go to the doctor is to make sure it's not an infection or something serious, because all they do is tell you to keep the babies hydrated, use the humidifier, and children's tylenol if necessary.

In Korea they give people shots of some sort when they go to the doctor/hospital with a cold, so my DH always thinks that it is ridiculous that they don't do the same here. I think he is starting to 'get' that people shouldn't be overmedicated though.

Take care and stay well!

I haven't had much problems with my Playtex sippy cups. The only real problems I had were that my daughter would chew the tops off the Stage 1 cups and then they would leak and with the Stage 2, one day, I hadn't screwed it on tight enough and she taught herself how to unscrew things. I have been mostly satisfied though. Both the problems were kind of my own creation.

Unfortunately I can't give any advice about the bottle. I just threw it in the trash at about 13 or 14 months and that was the end of it.

You might try doing a google search 'weaning from bottle to cup'. Here is one page I came up with: http://www.med.umich.edu/1libr/pa/pa_wenbotcu_pep.htm

I think you just have to keep offering the cup. I use diluted juice as an incentive to use to cup right now. I give them the cups in the bath sometimes so they can get used to it and I don't have to worry about it making a mess.

  • 3 weeks later...

Yayyy, now I can come to the mommy corner! Baby Mehdi Jim Ellaoui was born 2/18/08 at 12:51 pm 9 lbs even. And he is the sweetest thing God ever made (IMHO :) )

S2010026.jpg

S2010027.jpg

My first step will be to ask for advice on 2 things.

1) I have never ever had a problem with swelling in my whole life. Even in the the last 2 weeks of pregnancy my hands and feet barely puffed up at all. Since having the baby my hands and feet have ballooned! I have cankles! My toes are sausages! Its getting pretty uncomfortable. Should I worry about this? Is it normal for ya'll? And how do I reduce it?

2) Did anyone else have sore hands, arms, and shoulders when learning how to breast feed? It seems like supporting his head and my breasts is really giving my hands a workout and they are incredibly sore (especially with the swelling). My son feeds correctly, he's just heavy (9 lbs at birth with a 15 inch head) and I wasnt lacking in boobies before, so they're super-huge now.

Cheers me dears (F)

I'm a RN student,so I don't know a lot, lol! But with swelling it is always good to go see ur Dr. Yes some moms do complain of swelling after birth and it is completely normal, but to let ur mind rest easy, always best to go see the DR. One cant take a complete physical over the web, nor really give one good medical advice. As stated, some moms have swelling, and it is completely normal, while for others it could be a problem. Even after birth, one can still come down with preeclampsia--not saying this could be you, I'm just saying you should go see a DR to rule stuff out, simple as that.

With regards to ur baby breast feeding, use pillows to prop him up to ur breast level. Breastfeeding is soooo good for your baby! Soo much nutrients and ur passing along much needing immunities Fact of the day with regards to Breast milk: Breast milk has 3 phases:

1) Colostrum, thick yellow substance, high in protein, fat soluble vitamins & minerals than mature milk. BUT lower in calories, fat & lactose. Acts as a laxative. Rich in Immunoglobulins. 2) TRANSITIONAL milk, Immunoglobulins and proteins are decreased, while lactose, fat and calories Increase. 3) mature milk: After the first 2 weeks of lactation, mature milk replaces transitional milk. Appears Bluish. approx 20 kcal/oz!!

As well when breastfeeding, there are 2 parts of breastfeeding!! Foremilk and Hindmilk! Foremilk is the milk that comes out first, quenches baby's thirst. The second half is called HIND MILK that has more fat, more satisfying which leads to weight gain for the baby!! That's why it is important not to quickly switch breasts, or just milk for a short time on one breast!

Of course I'm just stating what is from a text book, and one is better to go on advice for your professional!! Best of luck!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

you should call your doctor about this swelling, esp if you start having headaches or arm and/or leg pain... you need to check to make sure that your blood pressure is ok... some swelling is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about, but if your pressure is up, it could become serious...

to try to help the swelling go away:

1) elevate your feet... recline yourself and elevate them above heart level

2) reduce your sodium intake... this is something you have to be very careful about... its not just table salt... so many of the foods that we eat are very high in sodium, even if it doesnt seem so... here are some examples... and a big culprit are soft drinks

3) make sure you drink LOTS of water... keep hydrated... as long as you are still being able to pee, you wont overdo it... it will also help boost that milk supply

4) move around as much as you feel comfortable doing to help mobilize that fluid that is causing your swelling... it may help with your soreness too

5) try some warm soaks

you can always check your blood pressure at certain pharmacies... walmart, cvs, and riteaid usually have those self-check machines

and for breastfeeding.... PILLOWS, PILLOWS, PILLOWS... you have to get yourself comfortable and bring the baby to you instead of bending over to him... so pile up those pillows :)

I had awful swelling after my c-section also. It started the day I left the hospital. I had a Dr's appt a few days after being home, and everything was still swollen. The Dr looked at it and said it's normal for many people after a C-section. It went away about 1 week and 3 days after my c-section. It was very uncomfortable and I thought my feet might explode! But it should go away for you soon! Nothing really reduced it, I would put my feet up and they'd go down a little but as soon as they weren't up anymore, they'd balloon back up. I heard one reason is that they pump lots of fluids into you during the c-section. Other reasons like the body takes longer to realize it's not pregnant anymore after a c-section. I was told to drink tons of water. You could call your Dr's office to find out for sure. Just sharing my experience. Finally it just went away.

Yassmine, my feet and legs swelled up more after the hospital than while I was pregnant. By the time I got home I really couldnt fit in any shoes. I asked my doctor about it and she said it was from having an IV for a couple of days (extra fluids) and being in bed from the C-section. My guess is its probably the same for you. I was back to normal about a week or 10 days after baby.

ETA: I just read what Stina wrote and yeah, what she said! :P

Cool, thanks guys :) Now if they would just swell evenly to match  . My left foot is almost normal but my right foot is one big blob. Weirdness.

I never had swelling, not even mild during the whole pregnancy but I had severe swelling after delivery as well, it started once I got home from the hospital, but they warned me it would probably happen. I had a very long labour (over 30 hours), I was given extra fluids in the IV the whole time, had A LOT of anestesia done on me and I ended up with a terrible tear that forced me to bed the first few days. All these things together made me swell like a balloon (even my face!), I didn't worry too much about it because, as I said, I was warned it was coming. It went away after about a week or so, when I could start moving around a bit more. Needless to say I was instructed to watch it and call immediately if it wasn't getting any better or was feeling other symptomes along with it.

As for you being sore all over since started breastfeeding...that totally happpened to me too! You're just spending a lot of time in an "unnatural/unusual" position feeding your baby, it gets better in time...you get used to it and you 2 will master the breasfeeding thing more and more.

Feeding is no problem. I sit up in a chair or on the couch and prop him up with boppy and pillows. He does great in football an cross cradle. Latch on is no problem. My hands just hurt like hell.
