@Wacken: mystery solved about that teething question...Turns out primary teeths are indeed 20 but they don't include pre-molars (that's how those are called), premolars are permanent teeths and usually erupts around 11-12 years of age. I looked up a teething chart online, basically the 4 he's missing are another set of molars that eventually will come out in the back (estimate around 25-33 months of age or so it said), so no wonder there's no room between my son's canines and molars

mommies, I have a question :)

At what age do kids stop being interested in hearing stories?

I bought a kid's book today because most our friends have kids, and I thought it would be nice to have it around for when they come visit. It has classic stories like winnie the pooh, matilda, pippi longstockings...

Think they'll be interested? they have ages from 2 to 7

Saludos,

Caro

Never, I suppose. When they are too old to be read to, they just read themselves. Books are always good presents. :)

Goodness! This thread is hopping now!

Back to the topic of sleeping through the night. A lot of people recommended "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" to me and I like parts of it. It helped me understand the sleep transitions that babies go through in terms of the amount of sleep they need and when they sleep. The sleep patterns in the book hold pretty true for my babies. For example, they went to bed at 10 or 11 when they were very young, but somewhere around 4 months, their bedtime moved up significantly, to about 7 p.m. Now they sleep from 7 p.m. to about 7:30 a.m. Until recently, they would wake up to eat once around 3 or 4 a.m. These days they are waking up for a feeding about 30% of the time. It is a lot easier on me now that they are sleeping later because instead of nursing them at 3 a.m. and then pumping at 6:30 a.m. before I go to work.

I feel like the darn breast pump is my mortal enemy these days, but that is another story!

I think babies aren't really capable of sleeping through the night until a certain age because their tummies are too small and can't hold the necessary food for them to go without eating for 12 hours or so. It was right around 9 months for us that Haneul and Iseul 'slept' through the night. And I think it has a lot to do with the fact that they are eating 3 meals of solid food a day.

RE: Teaching kids different languages. Our daughters will definitely learn English and Korean because those are our native languages. I am a Spanish teacher, so I will teach them Spanish as well. In the past I considered speaking to them in Spanish only, but I've found that since it isn't my native language, it doesn't feel natural to me. So I'm going to look into it a bit more and talk to other friends who are language teachers and see what worked for them. I do know that we will do a lot of supplemental schooling in Korean because we are living in the U.S. and, although my husband speaks only Korean with them and is a stay at home dad, he is not nearly as verbal as I am. I'm hoping that we will spend a lot of summers in Korea too.

Well, time to visit with my mortal enemy, the pump! TGIF tomorrow and I can breastfeed rather than pump during the weekend. :)

Okay so the first night didn't go so well. He refused to drink the water. Last night was better. He drank a little before bed and I only had to get up once to make a new bottle for him. But I know him very well and things can go back to where they were tonight. I know it will take some time so let's see. He eats well during the day so I know it's definitely time to get him off of the bottle at night.

Joel'sWife: I really don't like my pedi either. I have paged her several times and she does not respond at all. I want to switch over to someone else.

Do any of you have experience with IUD's? (Intrauterine device) I am going for my appointment next week and am really looking into getting one.

I got the copper IUD. I am not really sure why, but it made the flow of my period really unpredictable. I had it for about 9 months and then decided to have it removed before I came back to the US. I think beyond that weird and very inconvenient quirk, it would have been OK. Idiot proof, at any rate. We decided thereafter we didn't want any more children, so he had a vasectomy.

I understand there are 2 types of IUD's. I wonder if the other one causes the same reaction. Thanks for the input.

The mirena IUD usually lightens your period or stops it completely. I am no fan of hormones in any form regardless of amount, so this wasn't really an option for me, but lots of women have them and are happy with them. Worth looking into.

This thread is a great idea!

Mika is just over 5 months and we started with veggies. I cooked the peas and carrots (separately), blended them and put in the ice tray to freeze.

What I do when it's time to eat, is: take some baby cereal, add half of the cube of veggies and mix with water and feed it to her.

I will also try blending apples with just a little bit of banana and try and freeze that too for her.

Do you think we should do anything differently?

@KJandSH

Mika started sleeping "through the night" at about 3 weeks, she would go to sleep around 8 and woke up around 5am for a feeding. Come 2 months she was sleeping through the night for real, meaning 12 hours- from 8 to 8

@IUD.. after i had my m/c in august i went back on BC and as soon as i started my periode i went back to got my IUD.. (the doc said u have to have at least 1 periode after giving birth or m/c.. before u can get a IUD..) i got my IUD (mirena for 5years) in october 2oo7.. i had a lil spotting for 2-3 weeks and since then i had NOTHING at all.. no bleeding, no spotting, no mood swing like on BC.. nothing.. everytime i took the BC i was really sick cuz of the hormones and i had to take sometimes 5 tylenol pills a day.. but with the IUD i got nothing.. btw does it hurt when the doc takes it out..?

HELLO EVERYONE

Gavin still has a long way to go (he was born on Christmas Eve) and the breastfeeding is going great. I was watching the news yesterday and a woman went to a local Target to get Gerber baby food - turns out that the food was infested with live crawling maggots :dead: I will definitely be making Gavin's food!
