U Haul

Anyone know if I should rent the UHaul in the US and return it in the US, or rent it in Canada and return it in Canada, or rent it in Canada and return it in the US?

I guess I should call UHaul, but I was wondering if anyone had experience with this. It's more or less a "local" move, so returning it to the one I got it from would probably be the cheapest, but I wonder if they would allow that for international?

This is so far off for us but I looked in to it online and Uhaul is totally the way we are going. Such a fantastic price..plus I love roadtrips!!!!

I'm in southern Ontario (just outside of Hamilton) and we'll be driving to New Jersey...shouldn't be too bad.

Well, I just called them and said it would be no problem to do a "local" move, and renting it from the US and dropping it off in the US, since we're talking about 16 km round trip.

U-Hauls in the States are better maintained according to W5, the ones in Canada for the most part are junk.

Any idea why that'd be? For the most, I've noticed that things are usually pretty well kept in Canada. It depends on the person or business, of course, but in general, it seems that way.

I'm with Ron on this one. I've heard HORROR stories in the news back in Edmonton about U-Haul and their crappy trucks. Whatever you decide to do Jeremy, make sure it's a serious company. I just finished an "I want my money back" to the loaders we hired since our -Bren's- antiques were screwed up since these idiots used them as ANCHOR for BOXES.....

It'll just be with my local U-Haul franchise. I'll be doing all of the loading myself with maybe a little bit of help from my father-in-law. There's not even going to be any furniture, really, mostly just boxes and a TV. That move will be another month or so off, when I go help my mother-in-law move her stuff out of the house and into an apartment.

The cost will be $35 + $.99/mile. When I pick up the truck, I'll ask about a car trailer, but I'd imagine it's not a problem if I'm right behind her car in the UHaul when she crosses?

We are looking at getting a UHaul in Canada and dropping off in Utah. It was approx 24' van it is $825.00, for a 17' van $688.00. To tow my van behind is $212.00extra. That way we are not paying gas for two vehicles. Still a great deal, I was pleasantly surprised.

Derek had heard some horror stories about Uhaul in Canada as well, but didn't have any problems with his truck driving from Montreal to Virginia. I think it cost about $400. On the other hand, the Uhaul I used for a local move in Arlington, VA was absolute #######. There were a more than a few moments where I was convinced the truck was not going to make it another foot. Fortunately we got it back before it died completely. So I would guess the quality of their trucks really depends on the operator that you rent from in either the US or Canada.

W5 or WFive on CTV has an article called "Danger on the road", it is about U-Haul. The reason why they are worse here in Canada is that they are an Arizona based company and all their truck in Canada carry Arizona licence plates making it difficult for the provincial governments to regulate them. Hence low or no maintenance and as such a danger to the operator ad the publc in general. Not all are bad but I would say the majority are to some extent.

Lot of Uhaul horror stories out there from trucks breaking down OR going to pick up ur truck and its not there, because the previous renter hasnt yet returned it!!

I rented a u haul from Greenwood NS to DC in Dec 2004. Was an ok experience. Even though I booked it over a month in advance, I didn't know I had a gaurenteed truck until like 3 days before the move!! BUT the small town operator promised me he himself would drive to Halifax and get me a truck! Truck was in good mechanical condition, but dirty inside!! Was an ok experience! I drove it like a madman, 80 mph and avg 10 mpg!! When it comes to do it urself moves, Uhual is pretty much ur only choice as most truck rental companies dont do one way international moves!! When I do local moves I NEVER use uhual, normally rider or budget!! Best of luck
