I am sure this has been posted before but I am still totally lost. My husband has decided to start studying toward a Masters in Jan. Well before he can do that he needs to take a few more classes to be accepted to the program. As a permanant resident Is he eligible for financial aid? Also, will this in any way affect the affidavit of support.

thanks

Now that my husband is a citizen, we are preparting documents to apply to bring his parents here.

I don't think it would effect any of that HOWEVER...it's pretty late in the game to be requesting financial aid...It goes on a first come first serve basis and students started applying in Jan. I would assume he is eligible.

Stewart is doing the SAME thing - starts classes on May 8th but we're just paying for it :( Oh btw if he is thinking of starting classes in the spring no WAY will he get financial aid - or for summer as you had to fill out a 05-06 FAFSA, BUT if you're looking at fall you may have a chance. They look at last years tax returns...

go to the website and see what all it says - i'll look more for you too.

You should be fine, but there's a chance that he won't get the aid on time. You need to file with FAFSA by the deadline (March 15, I think) in order to receive your payment by the start of fall semester. You can file later, but risk being without funds for a while and having to go through a lot of bureaucratic hassle in order avoid paying tuition.

As to taking non-degree classes, that could be more difficult since financial aid targets degree-seeking students and funding is made available based on the number of credit hours needed to complete a degree. Since your husband plans to get a MAster's he should see if can already enroll for fall semester. Some schools/program allow students to fulfill requirements while enrolled if it's only two classes that are missing.

My husband, for example, was conditionally admitted into a Master's program; if he had not been able to fulfill the condition, they wouldn't have allowed him to finish his degree. Because he was enrolled in a degree program, he was eligible for financial aid and received a teaching assistantship which helps with tuition and cost of living. Financing graduate education is way easier than paying for undergrad or non-degree.
