Getting married outside the US

Dear all,

I applied for a fiance visa in the usual way - proposed to my girlfriend, went back to the UK whilst she filed for an I-129F, applied at the London embassy for a fiance visa, moved to the US, got married and then applied for and received my Green Card.

I have a friend who is considering doing something similar in a different way and I wondered whether what they were planning to do was possible.

They want to get married in the UK so that they don't have to apply for a fiance visa. He would then apply for some type of immigrant visa (presumably not a fiance visa as they would be married) whilst in the UK and she would return to the US. When the application is successful, he would move to the US and they would apply for the Green Card stuff.

Is this possible? Does the US recognize the marriage in the UK? Does the process take longer or shorter than the 'normal' fiance visa route?

TIA,

Mark

The other visa they speak of is also a marrige-based visa, called a K-3. It is not necessarily faster because you are already married. That being said, the regional forum for the UK http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?showforum=99 may be able to give you more informed and precise answers on what it's like to deal with the UK consulate, etc. and their experiences on processing times.
