Before getting married the couple has to apply for a marriage licence. Then I suppose you get married like any "regular" american couple?

After the wedding do you have to send some proof of the wedding to the USCIS or is it part of the AOS process?

I'm confused...

Hi :)

I highly recommend reading the guides up top or simply clicking Here

On the right under "Working, Traveling and Becoming a Permanent Resident" it shows the steps for filing your AOS after marriage.

Best of Luck

Yes, it is part of the AOS process. You don't need to do anything before that.

You send a copy of your marriage certificate with your AOS paperwork.

As an example, we had a civil ceremony. They provided us with an order form to get the marriage certification from the recorder's office. We made copies and sent the copy with the AOS package.

You'll need to include a copy of your marriage license with the AOS package you submit to USCIS after marriage. No need to submit any other "proof" to USCIS outside of your AOS package :)

Marriage Certificate

In some States, the marriage license and marriage certificate appear together on the same page. In others they are two separate documents. The license alone does not prove you married. Make sure you include a copy of an actual marriage certificate with your AOS filing. Sometimes (usually) you'll have to wait for this to come back to you after the marriage occurs. Of course the license is in your hands before the marriage.
