I finally got my noa for adjustment of status so I headed down to get my Ohio pick up my temp packet and do the written first thing this morning after I dropped my son off at school at 8:20

I had all of my docs except for my marriage certificate so had to drive home and go back .. frustrating but no biggie .. not like I'm missing work or anything lol. Found out I didn't need a temp packet so I went and did the written and passed and then they told me that they could squeeze me in for my driving exam. I was so nervous but it went well .. then when I went back to the other office for them to give me my license and the computer system went down. Arrrggg ... so by 12:30 pm I was driving home with my newly acquired license. Had I known that I was going to take my driving test today I would have at least done my hair instead of the usual ponytail as of late :)

You can drive on your Canadian license once you are here for a period of time (as long as it is still valid).. you will have to check with your state to see how long and some insurance companies will either charge you a higher rate for out-of-country or they will not insure you at all. My husbands insurance company Allstate was able to insure me.

Here in Ohio you have to wait until you have your NOA for adjusting status in order to get your license as well as your SSN, marriage certificate, valid Canadian drivers license and passport.

I had no problems changing my vehicle from an "ownership" to a "title" before I got my license to get Ohio plates.

If you have your license already you should be able to transfer it right over with a valid I-94.. They treat canadian licenses as out of state... My problem was I had a canadain class 3 with air brakes and they wouldnt give me a cdl.. just a regular license.

Again, it depends on where you live. If you have a valid I-94, they'll maybe give you a license, but only until the I-94 expires. If you have to surrender your Canadian license to get the new State one, you're going to have NO license after the I-94 expires.

Check out your DMV site for your state.

Congratulations on getting your Drivers lynamon! I got mine two weeks ago, and hadn't done a written exam or road test since I was 16!

Makes you feel like a kid again eh?

Exciting! haha

It depends on the state and the visa. For us, they wanted the NOA1 from adjusting status, and a copy of the marriage certificate, so it was about two months after the wedding. They didn't require that he take a written or driving test; Connecticut treats Canadian licenses like it does out-of-state license.

In order for me to get my drivers license here in WA. I have to go through the whole routinre written test then road test. They only exchange your license if from another stae. Thier site even mentions that licensed drivers from Canada wanting to get a WA license must also take the road test

Again, it does really does depend which state you live in. Pennsylvania asks for a SSN regardless of whether you're applying before or after AOS (they have two sets of requirements for both K1 and AOS status, believe it or not!).

The lady at the DSC in Vancouver told me that my CDL would transfer right over and I shouldn't need to take the road test again, thank heaven.

like has been mentioned it depends on the State you are moving to...

I moved to California and I had to take the eye exam, the written test and the road test before I could get my California license... according to the driver's manual I was supposed to surrender my Canadian license but all the lady did was ask for it and take some info off of it and then handed it back to me.. I did ask her if I could keep it and she said yes

Congratulations on getting the licence,

I tried to get mine in Kansas a few years ago but they said not until I move there and become a resident, wouldn't even give me a learners permit, just wanting to move there doesn't count. So for now Sharon is driving both vehicles.
