Sounds like you got a typical know-nothing to help you...

I would suggest you read this post from the thread I posted in November 2006 when I was inquiring about getting a SSN after moving to the US with a K-1 visa. Hope it helps.

When I went to apply for my SSN they told me to apply for it in my maiden name because that is the name that USCIS will recognize .. If I applied in my married name it would take much longer.. they told me that when I got my card in two weeks to just come into their office with the marriage certificate and change my name. That's just what I did and I've had no problems

After we were married, our next stop was the SS office. We had our marriage license, her passport with K1 inside. We made the SS application in her new name. No problem. After we received the SS card, we started the AOS process.

Did Jenn have a SS card before? I ask because you said "new SSN" and "it doesn't match whats on their screen". If she's had one before, she can change her name, but she won't get another SS#. Were you using the method of obtaining an original SS card in order to obtain a name change for Jenn? If so, that would easily confuse some of or fine government employees!

If the I-94 is expired you will need to wait for something from the USCIS like an EAD to get the card. Claudeth got her SSN card after she was here two weeks but it took about six weeks using the EAD as evidence to get her name changed after we were married.

Yes. That is the easiest and most problem free way of doing it. It really is 2 steps that must be done so better to keep it simple for them.

I did the same thing because I got married as soon as I entered the states with no time to apply for a SSN in my maiden name. The guy at our SS office told us that I could not apply in my maiden name even though it "matched what was on the screen" because that wasn't my legal name now that I am married. He would not help us at all. We called the USCIS (I think...) and they said that I would not be able to get my SSN until after applying for my adjustment of status at which time my name will be changed in their computer and "match" with my SSN application. Now what? Is there something more we can do to get my SSN sooner?

11/07/07 - AOS package sent off to Chicago lockbox

11/09/07 - applied for SSN & got it (with married name!)

11/15/07 - package received

11/19/07 - NOA1 received for I-485, I-765, I-131 (snail mail)

11/20/07 - SSN card arrived in mail

11/20/07 - touch (I-131)

11/24/07 - notification for biometrics received (dated Nov. 20)

12/04/07 - Biometrics appointment

12/05/07 - touch (I-485, I-765)

12/21/07 - touch (I-485 transferred to CSC)

01/04/08 - touch (I-485)

01/06/08 - touch (I-485)

01/08/08 - EAD approved, card production ordered

01/11/08 - EAD card production ordered...again

01/15/08 - EAD approval sent

01/16/08 - AP approval sent

01/18/08 - AP touch

01/24/08 - AOS touched

02/07/08 - AOS approved, card production ordered

02/13/08 - Green card and welcome to USA letter in hand!!!

I'd go to another office or ask to speak with a supervisor. I was able to get my SSN in my married name. The person looking after me tried to run me off but I persisted so she found a supervisor to help her out. Read this post by I Quit. It should help.

Thanks! These are all great pieces of advice. My husband is ready to go down there and go directly to the supervisor! THANKS SO MUCH!
