Ok, I'm reading threw this.. and I'm unbelievably confused..

I have an interview date... November 8th.... and we are planning on getting married around the first week of Jan.

I've been reading allot of post. and people have so many abbreviations. and I'm not sure what are the following steps I need to take after the interview..

Is the point of entry pre-determined for you?

what do I need to do to be able to start working? my and my soon to be husband would like to buy a house together.

what about traveling back and fourth? if I wanted to go back to Canada for holidays? what's involved there?

and finally what are/do these mean?

AOS?

AP?

and EAD?

Than you in advanced for the help..

I don't think I could be anymore excited and nervous at the same time

aos = adjust of staus

Ap = advance parole (in case u want to leave the USA (includding canada) before AOS is complete

EAD = Employment authorized document! k1 is able to work ,BUT you need the EAD stamp and most POE do not give them.

Others that went through the k1 process will give out more info, and/or check out the k1 forum stickies at the top of the k1 forum

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

From the little I know about K visas, I think you apply for them once you're in the US.- Good luck, ask away and welcome to VJ!!!

Just wanted to say welcome! :)

The wonderful posters before me have given you the info and links to answer your questions.

I just wanted to add my personal opinion. I was very sad to know I wasn't able to travel outside the country until I received my green card. I am able to travel back to Canada if I get Advanced Parole (AP) but that can take several weeks. I have 3 very elderly grandparents and if something happened.... :( I don't want to think about it.

So I ultimately decided that I couldn't put my life on hold simply on the chance that something may happen to them.

Best of luck in your journey

~Laura :)

After you enter the USA, you've activated your K-1 Visa. After marriage you apply for AOS. AP and EAD are now included with this whole fee. It will take approximately 90 days to get your AP and EAD. You can't work until you get your EAD. The only way you can work BEFORE getting this document that you've applied for, is to go to JFK, and get a 90 day stamp on your passport. However, if you don't receive your EAD before the 90 days are up on your passport, you can't work. So, most people don't work until they get their EAD.

AP takes more like 3 or 4 months. You need this to get back to Canada, and back into the US, after marriage, UNTIL you have your green card.

If you have an emergency in the interim, you can make an INFOpass appointment, bring appropriate emergency paperwork (death certificate, letter from hospital about imminent death etc.) and you could be granted an immediate AP document. A few people on here have gotten one this way during an emergency.

Read the guides on Adjustment of Status, Employment Authorization and Advance Parole for more information.

There are a few land crossings that give out the EAD, BUT even those that do hand them out, don't seem to do it consistently (from me reading on VJ)
