I had to wait 30 days after my wife arrived in order to add her to my insurance.

You would phrase it by saying that since your spouse moved to the USA they have "lost" there insurance in there home country and a spouse "losing" ones insurance is indeed a qualifying event...

YMMV

I couldnt add my husband at all without his SSN (which we still cant get) :(. But my insurance is crappy and it would cost me $197 clams every 2 weeks anyway. I just pay out of pocket for the rare case he needs medical/dental care.

I was allowed to add Andre; but we did fall under the qualifing event cause ours was a K-1.

I would call or have your HR call the insurance company and ask this very question. It would be important to add him during the open enrollment if they won't allow you to do it later.

He does not need a SSN. They added Andre on with his A#. And, since you are in process, he does have one of those. They will change to his SSN when he gets one.

I was gonna say!! I mean if we had to wait for a SSN that would be sometimes a 4 month wait and what if he got really ill during that time? That would be unfair to make someone wait for that.

How does one go about getting the A number?

Ours was on any paperwork that came in the mail, including NOA's. Again, this is a K-1. I am not sure how they do K-3's or whatever else you might be filing.

My husband isn't here yet and is not currently on my health/dental/life insurance plan at work. Open enrollment starts in 2 weeks and I'm wondering if I should put him on there. It will mean added cost to me. I was going to just wait until he gets here to do it but I don't think his arriving in the US is a change in status....normally that's only when you just get married, and we've been married for almost a year now.

Any hr reps in here? :help:

I don't think him moving here will count as a qualifying event, but I'm almost equally as certain that you'll have a hard time getting him on your insurance without him residing here.

This might be a good question for your HR rep.

Any place I have worked thus far did recocgnize the move of the foreign spouse to the US as a qualifying event. Check with your HR folks but I am quite certain that you will have 30 days from his entry to put him on your insurance.

Mine was $278 every two weeks and I carried him for 14 months. He just qualified for his own on October 1st and I was doing the .

Ours is a requirement. My husband has sickle cell and was actually in the ER for an episode three weeks after he got here. A month after that, he broke his nose. I didn't call to put him on the insurance until after the ER episode. Luckily, the insurance company backdated our enrollment to our wedding date and he was covered. Poor guy, at the hospital, when I didn't know if we would have insurance coverage or not, they wanted to keep him overnight. I said what are you going to do for him? The answer was IV fluids and pain meds. I said, uh huh......I can give him pain pills and make him drink water at home. He's out of here today.

That was my one concern in this whole thing was his residence now. But, if they won't let her do it as a qualifying event, they have to give somewhere. I'd talk to supervisors and everyone else until I got some satifying answer.

My insurance had wording in it to the effect "you can add or change your family members in the event of marriage, birth, adoption or other significant family changes. I would interpret that to mean his moving here would qualify. I would call your provider and ask. No need to pay for the family plan since you don't know how long the AP will last.

well I already have a family plan since I carry insurance for my daughters so although it will be added cost we're only talking about $20/week tops for me. I have a single family plan now so i'd switch to a regular family plan. Thanks for all the info!

I agree with many of the others here. When Derek moved down from Canada it was indeed considered a qualifying event even though we had already been married for almost a year.
