Do I put my husband on my insurance?

My husband isn't here yet and is not currently on my health/dental/life insurance plan at work. Open enrollment starts in 2 weeks and I'm wondering if I should put him on there. It will mean added cost to me. I was going to just wait until he gets here to do it but I don't think his arriving in the US is a change in status....normally that's only when you just get married, and we've been married for almost a year now.

Any hr reps in here? :help:

I am trying to remember if hubby was allowed to add me when I moved here or if we just waited till the open enrollment, which would have been a month or two after I moved here....

I was allowed to add Andre; but we did fall under the qualifing event cause ours was a K-1.

I would call or have your HR call the insurance company and ask this very question. It would be important to add him during the open enrollment if they won't allow you to do it later.

He does not need a SSN. They added Andre on with his A#. And, since you are in process, he does have one of those. They will change to his SSN when he gets one.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

It wasn't a requirement for my wife and stepchild... I believe if you push the issue they have an alternative to the SSN... do not let it be an impediment to you putting your hubby on the plan...

YMMV

I don't think him moving here will count as a qualifying event, but I'm almost equally as certain that you'll have a hard time getting him on your insurance without him residing here.

This might be a good question for your HR rep.

I was gonna say!! I mean if we had to wait for a SSN that would be sometimes a 4 month wait and what if he got really ill during that time? That would be unfair to make someone wait for that.

How does one go about getting the A number?

the A# is the alien number, it will be on the visa.... I am not sure where else it can be found .... someone else might know better....

It's on the top of your NOA2, under his name.

Actually the visa isn't the trigger... if age 18 or older it requires that you are present in the USA and employment authorization at time of application....

YMMV
