What's unreasonable about requiring someone be knowledgeable about the proper use of the firearm they wish to own?[/b]

Steven, it's not "unreasonable." What doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me is testing someone's "book knowledge" on something that's far more "practical" and "ability-oriented" such as using a gun. Maybe both would be useful, I don't know. However, I can't imagine just having a written exam.

Well, since we're speaking in general terms here, I haven't heard so far any compelling argument why some kind of exam would by unreasonable.
and who administers the exam? who keeps the records of people who have taken the exam ... slippery slope time ..

How is requiring a license taking away the right to own a gun? And take that further out - if we are to take the 2nd Amendment literally, where do you draw the line in terms of kinds of weaponry a citizen can own for their perservation?

steven, your answer is right there in your first sentence, i bolded it for you.

Do I have the right to own a nuclear weapon?

Absolutely! Only a communist would deny you that essential right.

That won't work, Chuck. See the second amendment doesn't exactly extend beyond the US borders. Steven's going to put that baby in his backyard. :P

What about land mines? Or a moat around my house filled with man-eating crocodiles? How far can we take the 2nd Amendment to?

For what it is worth, I'm going to add my 2 cents. I am a woman who owns three guns of my own. I enjoy hunting squirrel, rabbit, duck, pheasant, turkey, grouse and deer. I have always enjoyed trap shooting and know how to handle my guns. Some of the comments that I have heard are all good comments.

The 2nd Ammendment - how long ago was that written? It was very different times and by the time that you loaded the cannon or the power gun, people were able to get out of the way. What I don't agree with is the high powered automatics. That is not necessary for hunting. Hunting with a gun is a sport.

Also, people kill people - guns are just the vehicle. And speaking of vehicles, you can kill just as easily with a 1000# piece of steel.

About the gun locks - that's a good idea but who is going to enforce it?

I live 5 miles from a school shooting where a 15 year old boy took the life of his principal. There was a huge campaign here for the gun locks but so many parents didn't think it would help. My guns are now locked but they could easily be cut off. There will always be debates about guns and gun laws.

I think that something needs to be done - but what? and what about the people that are responsible for their guns like I am? why do I have to suffer consequences because of someone else?

Hmmmm

Well, that constitution won't matter much. There is such a thing as a non-proliferation treaty out there. Even those not party to it are getting heat from all directions when trying to acquire a piece. Not sure that Steven on a lonely island could stand up to all that. He'll be better off pushing for his right to protect his home with a nuke throiugh the courts right here in the good ole' USofA. Imagine how safe a place this would be if everyone had a little nuke to protect himself.

oh you mean steven might just get inspected by the un?

and yes i knew about the non-proliferation treaty, but steven's obviously not a signatory to it.

Based on our discussions in the other thread I think its perfectly reasonable to use a nuclear bomb as a coffee table. Because its only a weapon if I set it off.

and on the plus side, if you have crappy shielding, it will keep your coffee warm too
