the mandate was vetoed by the governor..as he knows it has open Pandora's box up in the state..it will be challenged in court....since it is now law

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

As much as I hate saying this - I hope it does get hauled to the courts! If a moment of silence is needed for reflection, perhaps our legislators are the ones needing to think about what they are (not) doing.

i agree, i see no reason why a time of self reflection is not needed..

I reflect in the am before I leave the house or in the pm when I come back. In private. That's how it ought to be, I think.

Teachers are hired and paid to teach not to shut up.

Some schools have been implementing meditation for the students with great success. The teachers don't need to be constantly talking in order for the students to learn.

Read my edit: Where does this nonsense stop?

Hey I taught middle schoolers for a few years... and I had them "meditate" (more like sitting down and breathing) for about 3-4 minutes when they started getting rowdy...

It was awesome how I had to do this less and less through each school year and some of the kids starting actually improving academically!

As for praying on their own... well, there is a Constitution to uphold.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

I think they should also mandate a moment of silence to pray for a new Chicago Transit Authority because frankly, the system sucks and they're going to make it less reliable and more expensive.

here, here!!! :angry::protest::ranting:

As for a moment of silence REQUIRED BY LAW.... hmmm, seems a slippery slope...

Our schools in Georgia (or at least the school systems I've taught in) have had the moment of silence instituted for quite a while now. We usually sing the National Anthem, say the Pledge, and then have a moment of silence. Not at any time is there mention of prayer or meditation. However, people start harping on the "separation of church and state" right about now when the moment of silence is mentioned or the conservative Christians start harping on how "god has been taken out of the schools" at the same time. The Constitution does state that there be a separation, but it doesn't prohibit one from praying on one's own if so desired. If one or more of my students uses this moment of silence to pray to their god, then so be it. I've not had one student try to push their god on anyone else during the moment of silence in all my 13 years of teaching.

BTW, we weren't given the choice as to having or not having the moment of silence. Remember, teachers don't make the decisions - the state and local board of education does that. *sigh*
