A manager at a Detroit meatpacking plant said Monday that 15 immigrant women were fired last month after attending a protest for immigrant rights. He said they had been told that they would be terminated if they missed work on the day of the protest.

[...]

But the workers say they were treated wrongly.

"It was not fair,'" said Mercedes, a 31-year-old Detroit woman who attended the rally and was fired. "We went to fight for our rights." Mercedes is undocumented and asked that her last name not be used.

they arent here legally, they dont have the rights of a legal... and even if they did, if your boss tells you that if you miss work you will be fired and you choose to go, well, dont whine about it when he actually DOES fire you... that manager shouldnt have hired them in the first place unless they showed proof of being a LEGAL immigrant...

why is she asking that her last name not be used? if she will go to a park and rally for her so-called rights as an illegal immigrant here, why isnt she PROUD to use her last name?

i say that LEGAL immigrants and american citizens are treated wrongly when ppl who have no respect for the law of this land think they can demand whatever the hell they want and expect to get it... AND even worse, that our greedy a$$ politicians try to cater to those demands... they should be remembering the ppl who actually DID vote them into office... not ppl who may or may not be able to vote in the future

Wait a minute. There's a employment AGENCY (Minutemen) that hires illegal aliens?

And by the way isn't that an ironic name for an agency that hires illegal immigrants?

"Many were employed by Minuteman Staffing. So when Wolverine wanted to fire the workers, the meatpacking company told Minuteman to let go of the workers, he said. A manager with Minuteman said he couldn't comment on the case."

Love it

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

If they get their jobs back .. then I should be able to take off whenever I want, right? Afterall they are wanting the rights that a USC has, so I should have the right to call off to go to the event of my choice. As it is, if I call off sick, I need a doc note for either me or one of my kids.

No sympathy from me.

Someone needs to tell these folks that even American citizens can't get time off to go to protests!

French citizens, though, maybe.
