We are having an influx of this lately and I can never understand why people do this, harm others.

I am seriously thinking of home schooling my son...I know I can't protect him from everything but man school sure has changed since my time. I graduated highschool in 2002 and my sister is currently in her freshman year in high school. She gets picked on so much it's ridiculous. She has us as her support system but there are those who don't have an outlet. They either commit suicide or go on a rampage and then kill themselves. This has to stop.

I think parenting classes should be mandatory!

If a married couple want to raise a child they shoud first under go some test be required to have a license. You need a drivers license to drive why not have a license to care for a child sense no one is responsible enough now in todays world to raise a child.

A parenting test? Whatever next?

Needless to say, there is very little point in pondering that one.

I am suprised at those who are suggesting that there is an epidemic of this kind of thing, but I do see that even these isolated incidents are unacceptable. The common thread does appear to be mental illness that is allowed to go untreated, individuals who are at risk to themselves and other people being allowed to drift along unchecked.

It's a very tragic thing for everyone concerned. Luckily in this instance, the only one to lose their life was the sorry individual who for whatever reason seemed to find solace in taking up the gun and turning it on friends/teachers before turning it on himself.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

I would not simply put it down to mental illness. Something or a chain of things are clearly triggering this. As I said before, why is it that these sort of incidents are generally isolated to kids here. I by no means have the answer as I do not know what these kids are going through but it is wrong to simply put it down to mental illness. The guy involved with the Virginia tech massacre, for example, was bullied for many years before he finally cracked.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Parenting tests? How would that be implemented, exactly?

Every child and every parent and every situation is different. Sure, some are similar, but none are exactly the same. There's no one "default" setting, so testing potential parents and marking them "right" or "wrong" for answers that would inevitably be subjective is, in my opinion, absolutely crazy.

There would also be no way to test for every conceivable situation. Kids are unpredictable, as are the predicaments they place themselves into at times. Furthermore, any exam that tests parenting skills would need to be updated constantly -- think about how parenting requirements are different today than 10 years ago, let alone 30 or 50 years ago.

While it's absolutely true that no one is "born a parent," I don't think anyone can be trained to be a parent either. I see it as a "learn-as-you-go" process and I doubt it'll ever change. How my parents raised me might have been wrong for someone else; likewise, how someone else raised their child might have been wrong for me. It all depends on the people involved and the situation at hand.

Good thing he was a bad shooter....

But seriously - I don't get how those obviously mentally disturbed kids get to walk into a public school.

Shouldn't they be locked up?!

what!!?!?!?!?!?

you want me to have cops inside my house to see if my guns are secure?

my dad had over 100 guns scattered throughout our house when i was a teen. i had the knowledge that if i touched one without his permission i was, in his words, "going to meet every blade of grade personally out in the back yard."

i do not need the cops playing big brother in my house! :ranting:

I understand what Evdogg412 is saying. Basicly, you do have to have a license for driving, boating, fishing, hunting, business, immigration, anything! The one job to me, one of the most important jobs on this planet, raising a child and making sure that his / her wellbeing is taken care off. Yet, anyone can have a child and try to raise it (or lack of), and some people should never ever raise a child. A hard job and sometimes I am wondering at times if I am doing the right thing. And sure, all kids are different. Even my two daughters and two stepsons, I treat them the same yet as different as they all are I react differently to each coz they are all unique and respond differently to talking, punishment or rewards. I wished kids came with a manual :P

10Yr GC arrived 07/02/09 - Naturalization is next

And now the drama ends - they took the Green card . . .
