Your drawing a line between 56 and 79. I don't think the first absolves what Carter did in the second. Whether we were right or wrong to help the Shah get back his throne is immaterial. Carter could have stopped the carnage that we have now.

I didn't say no line, I said that the mistake made in 56 does not let Carter off for the disaster made in 79. But I definitely think that if the radicals hadn't taken over Iran we wouldn't have had 9/11 and by extension the second war with Iraq.

Now we actually have a point that can be argued with logic...

Yes, they MAY have contributed in some fashion to 9/11... if you ignore the fact that the majority of the hijackers came from a staunch US Ally...

And how Iran contributed to Saddam Hussein as causative material for a second war in Iraq is beyond me... maybe you could clarify that also.

The further point to address is, since we're hung up on causation- is to think about who screwed whom over in the first place. This tends to set things off like a chain of dominoes until one has what one has:
