After I get married to Nadia in her city in Sibera (brrrrrrrrrrrrr!), we will need to travel to Moscow to file the I-130 petition. So, we'll need a hotel near the Embassy ideally or anywhere near a metro station. Nadia has been to Moscow but is not sure of a hotel for us as she stayed with a friend who no longer lives in Moscow.

A few years ago I stayed at a hotel translated in English as the Hotel Alpha for $100 a night and it was a nice room with breakfast. We might try there but I don't remember where it was at because my old Russian girlfriend took me to it. It was very close to a metro but I think it was pretty far out from central Moscow.

Any recommendations?

Many people have rented private apartments instead of hotel rooms.. there are many good agents and Moscow Rick is one that comes to mind that many have used....

YMMV

My wife stayed at the hotel called "Ukraina", was close to the metro and close to embassy itself.

Mike.

An apartment is an option if I knew exactly when we'd need it and for how long...but there are too many variables that can affect when we travel to Moscow and for how long.

Funny you should mention Moscow Rick. On my very first trip to Moscow to meet my very first Russian girlfriend, Irina, I booked a flat with Rick for $70 per night. It was, if you'll pardon my French, a ###### hole! Soviet Union style at its worst. It was so bad my girlfriend got very angry so we only stayed one night and then went to the Hotel Alpha I already mentioned. Maybe Rick's got better places but this one was no bargain at $70 per night in 2004. I still blame that awful flat for what turned out to be a bumpy and somewhat disappointing meeting with Irina. I learned that the place you stay at is all important to make a good first impression. Irina told me her own humble apartment was a lot better than Rick's dump.

Personally I have never used MR but I have read many that have... It seems the people who have used him are split into two groups... the ones who sing his praises and others who have had experiences such as yourself...

Yes, I think a lot of first time travelers to Moscow find comfort in dealing with an American man like Rick who's married to a Russian woman. The flat I got was actually in a close in location but it needed a complete renovation and some decent bed linens and blankets and a clean and functional kitchen. I'm sure, however, that some guys who are in Moscow for business or who have very little money might find the flat OK. For romance...no way.

You might want to look into Russian Girl Friday too. I haven't ever used her, but I've heard good things. I've corresponded with her a couple times, and will probably wind up using her to help with lodging and logistics when my Nadya goes for her interview.

Thanks...I'll quick her out.

In my case (August 2006) it was Ukraina hotel. Well... Probably it's not the best you can find but moneywise that was ok. Moscow Rick.. We were thinking about it but I wasn't alone, I had to take my little daughter for interview. In question of personal security any apartment wasn't very good idea. Especially if you don't live in this city. And even if you do you'd better to be very picky chosing an apartment.

I lived in Ekaterinburg, so I had big choice of travel agents. I just went to one them, asked to find me something with moderate price and everage level of service. I didn't want my child to stay in a dump but we didn't need something de luxe either.

Metro Kievskaya was close, we could walk there or take a bus. Our way for med exam and later for our interview didn't take much time. So if you are not very capricious person and all you need is just B&B you can chose Ukraina.

PS I worked on that field - apartments for foreigners :innocent: It's safe in E-burg but Moscow is much bigger and less safe place. Also all apartments and all clients are so different... That's why some people say OK about MR and some are p**sed off.

Thanks for the information. You are right about apartments in Russia being different. I will be renting a flat in Krasnoyarsk because her college age son will be in her flat...so for privacy and so forth we decided to rent a flat in her city. The best flat that is reasonably priced she could find is an apartment on the FIFTH FLOOR! No elevators of course. It will be really fun getting my luggage up 5 floors. I wonder how old people in Russia handle climbing so many stairs? Even some hotels are bad. When we met in St. Petersburg, the hotel was on the 4th floor of a historic building.

Maybe that's why Russian women have such nice bodies...it's all that exercise!

Holiday Inn Lesnaya is less than 1 mile from the Embassy and Red Square. Costs ~$150 a night.

Are you doing Direct Consular filing?

That sounds pretty good. I'll look it up on the web. Thanks.

Yes, I'm doing DCF.

With my first fiancee we stayed at the Ukraina. The last time I was there it was $ 138 a night but winter may be cheaper. It is a short walk to the embassy, cross the bridge, go one more block, turn right and the embassy is on the left. I would say a 10-12 mintue walk.

There is an apartment a friend manages that is two - three blocks from two metro stations, near stores and restaurants, very close to MOM for a medical and in the same general part of town as the embassy. ( I think one metro stop). It is first floor and very secure and a decent apartment. My fiancee stayed there for her interview. It is $ 100.00 a night If it is of any interest I can send you the contact info. I have no concection with it.

It's not really an issue when the life expectancy for a Russian male is around 55. Long before you can't walk you are probably dead. If you do live long, it is probably because you can make it up those stairs.
