SSN for K-3 Visa Holder

Hi,

My wife is scheduled for her K-3 interview on the 2nd of November 2007; once she gets her visa, when will she be issued an SSN number. This is just a general questions.

Applying for K-3 Visa.

I-130 Petition

18th January 2007, Married.

8th March 2007, Sent I-130 USPS Mail.

12th March 2007, I-130 Recieved by NSC, Signed for by F HEINAUER.

20th March 2007, $190.00 Check Cashed by USCIS, Back of check indicates file is with California Service Center.

23rd March 2007, Recieved I-797 NOA1 for I-130 (Had a spelling mistake in Benificiary Last Name).

26th March 2007, Called USCIS about mispelling on I-797; they made a note, gave me a "T" Number, said submit I-129F with current I-797.

19th April 2007, "touched".

20th April 2007, "touched".

13th June 2007, "touched". (Due to Phone Call Enquiry)

14th June 2007, "touched".

12th July 2007, "touched", (Due to Phone Call Enquiry)

15th August, 2007, Approved.

I-129F Petition

28th March 2007, Sent I-129F USPS Mail.

30th March 2007, I-129F Recieved by USCIS Chicago, Signed for by S SANDOVAL.

4th April 2007, $170.00 Check Cashed by USCIS.

4th April 2007, NOA1 Notice Date.

6th April 2007, NOA1 Recieved.

10th April 2007, "touched".

19th April 2007, Recieved Email, my Petition transfered to the California Service Center.

23th April 2007, "touched".

8th June 2007, "touched".

10th June 2007, "touched". (This is a Sunday???)

11th June 2007, "touched".

12th July 2007, "touched", (Due to Phone Call Enquiry)

15th August 2007, Approved.

6th September 2007, NVC sends to Chennai Consulate.

2nd of November 2007, Interview at Chennai Consulate.

9th of December 2007, Entry in to USA... Home in Dayton, Ohio.

Hello!!

First, CONGRATULATIONS on your interview date...only a few weeks away!!! Excited?

The answer to your question is "NO" your wife will not get a SSN after the interview. She must come to the USA to be able to apply for a SSN. But first, you must adjust status (AOS) for her at a cost of $1010 which takes about 3 months. Then, she can get her SSN.

Until that time, you and wifey will be cozy getting to know each other once again!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Adjustment of status can take a lot longer than 3 months. However, the new fee for adjustment of status includes applying for work authorization (EAD), which does take about 3 months to come through, and the SSN can be applied for once she has the EAD. :)

24 Feb 2007 - Sent I-130 to London USCIS office (I'm the petitioner)

25 May 2007 - NOA2

2 June 2007 - Received Packet 3

12 Oct 2007 - Sent Packet 3 back by special delivery

5 Nov 2007 - Interview in London - Approved without any hitches!

7 Nov 2007 - Visa and MBE arrived by SMS! :)

30 Jan 2008 - Fly to Michigan!! :)

Adjustment of status can take a lot longer than 3 months. However, the new fee for adjustment of status includes applying for work authorization (EAD), which does take about 3 months to come through, and the SSN can be applied for once she has the EAD. :)

04/16/2007 - Sent I-130 to VSC via USPS Express Mail

05/12/2007 - NOA1 received by snail mail after a loooong wait

05/14/2007 - Sent I-129F for K3 to Chicago Lockbox via USPS Express Mail

10/22/2007 - I129F APPROVED (161 days), I130 APPROVED (188 days)

11/08/2007 - I129F received at NVC, embassy case number generated.

11/13/2007 - I129F forwarded to embassy.

11/18/2007 - 129F petition received at embassy

01/09/2008 - finally, DOS gives me the interview date, April 16, 2007 (ouch)

01/23/2008 - never got packet 4, emailed embassy

04/11/2008 - picked up packet 4, did medical

04/14/2008 - medical report pickup, no problems

04/16/2008 - interview date- APPROVED!!!!!

04/18/2008 - both of us are home at last, POE JFK!

05/21/2008 - sent AOS and EAD

05/27/2008 - received NOA1 for AOS and for EAD

06/02/2008 - received Biometrics appt letter

06/19/2008 - Biometrics appointment scheduled - DONE

06/19/2008 - both AOS and EAD touched because of biometrics

07/29/2008 - EAD approved.

05/13/2009 - AOS Interview - APPROVED!/ Card production ordered email

05/18/2009 - Welcome Letter received

06/12/2009 - Second card production ordered email

06/19/2009 - Approval notice send email

06/22/2009 - Green Card received

04/09/2012 - Applied for Citizenship by Express Mailing N400 to NBC

04/10/2012 - N400 received by USCIS

06/23/2012 - Biometrics appointment

07/27/2012 - Appointment scheduled for N400 interview

09/05/2012 - Interview passed, oath ceremony completed, and Naturalization certificate received.

Can i apply for health insurance cover for her with out her having a SSN Number, my work benifits website ask for an SSN to process adding her on. is there a requirement that a person have an SSN in usa to be eligible for health care.

I am on my husbands health plan through his work. I have used it a few times with no problems.

I am still waiting for my EAD and I don't have a SSN yet.

Every company will vary, and some will tell you that they can't add someone who does not have an SSN and they'll use the Patriot Act as a reason. Which is of course complete bullpuckies, and you'll probably have to argue with them about it. There is no law (federally, there may be individual state law) that requires one to have an SSN in order to be insured.

You can always get an ITIN in the interim if you have to though.

I put my wife on my Blue Cross without a SSN, the column even said optional next to it. I saw a disclaimer on some form that said if your company tells you a SSN is required call the insurance company directly to get them added.

I also had her added on my checking account at Bank of America (the bank I have my savings account through requires a SSN), listed her as my beneficiary on my life insurance, got her on my credit card as an authorized user, and put half the house under her name. That was about as far as I've been able to get without a SSN though.

The answer depends on your insurance carrier. Some do still require the SSN. I suggest you skip the website and call your company's benefits department directly. In our case, the website asked for the SSN, because that's normal but when I called, I was told I needed to fax in copies of the visa and I-94 once they arrived, and my wife and step-daughter would be added right away.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...
