What should happen to agriculture in the US?

Ah, the big catch 22. I guess at some point everyone is going to have to face the real cost of production. Up until now manufacturers have always been able to look somewhere else for cheaper labour/cheaper overheads but I suspect that at some point there will be an end to it.

I am not sure what this will mean in the long run, but until then, I guess we will all keep running to try to escape the inevitable. I guess the 'not in my lifetime' argument is just too strong, and I certainly don't expect any politicians to take the long view, that's just too scary and would result in unelectability. (which isn't a word, but it should be)

If we need to import farm workers to get it done that is fine with me, just make them here legally is all.

Exactly. Open the Visa up to everyone abroad rather than only people from one country.

How are we gonna keepem on the farm? What is gonna happen when they claim an injury that happened 10 years ago?

Which is also true and likely to happen.

This is why I said earlier, why is it the people living in ghettos, in the cities, around the country with the poor poor me attitude cannot take up one of these jobs. I took up various farming jobs while going through school. Actually at one stage I had 4 jobs. Immigration is not the issue for me. What is the issue, is the huge number of sorry assed people who lounge around in cities claiming poor poor them when the jobs are clearly out there.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Cuz they say the work is too hard.. hey man, same thing happened when I was in the hog plant, lots of people would apply, lots of people would quit, cuz again, it's not an easy job, and people are just trying to find the 'easy job that pays over 10 an hour' which of course won't happen if you didn't finish high school, or dont do hard physical work (I know concrete finishers get 20 an hour, but heck, that ain't an easy job)

very true, i think some people are too soft and don't know difficult if it ran them over. too many expect top dollar right now instead of working their way up. life isn't easy, folks.

before i joined the army, i was working outside at a place assembling farm equipment in corpus during the summer. not exactly what i'd call optimal conditions to work in. but i didn't b!tch about it and i got the job done until i had to quit a few days prior to joining the military.

And I have a lot of respect for people who do those jobs and work hard.

I get angry when I hear the term doing the jobs Americans do not want to do. And I do not blame immigrants for this. As you said if you do not have a high school education or college education you will have to probably physical work 50 times as hard as some ivy league wanker in an office. When I travel to various cities in the US I get really pissed off seeing people just sitting there with a sorry assed look on their face while I know that if they simply traveled for a day or so they could move to an area where there is work for someone with their skills.

Heck I am even willing to support and initiative to give them a few grand to move and get a freakin job. Question is will they do it...

However lazy you may think these people are for not taking up this agricultural opportunity you don't seem to be able to put forward a workable plan on how you are intending to persuade these people to take it up. Not that it's up to you to do so, but my point is, while this may or may not be correct it doesn't solve the current crisis.

So while the debate goes on these crops go unpicked and the problem remains.

Isn't farm work exempt from the minimum wage in any case?

Some people seem to think the US is only country like this. Well people who are born here. I think this is the main reason why so many immigrants do so well here. They know you have to work hard to get somewhere. They don't rely on becoming stars, athletes, wait for handouts or expect to sell drugs to make it. My friend's uncle still cleans buildings in the US and is close to 70 years old. What does he have to show for it.. 22 houses paid off in the Baltimore area. He came to US, from Poland, with absolutely nothing apart from the clothes on his back. Welfare was non existent bank then. Neither was EBT or federal student loans etc.

Why is it up to us to put forward a workable plan. They need to get the ###### out of the inner cities where there are next to no jobs for unskilled workers and move to areas of employment.

Common sense really. When you have nothing you start at the bottom. Some need to stop idolizing and dreaming of becoming the next JayLo and any other moron in the entertainment industry and actually get out there and get a job. Even if it means starting off as farmers.

welfare contributes a big deal man, back when I was in eastern NC, i remember this crackheads who would send their kids to school to get the checks, cuz a requirement is that ur kid should be in a school to get the money.. and to make it worse, those same kids had to work night shifts and mcdonalds or somehitng cuz the parents would spend it on booze or crack.. it's sad.. some kids just won't get the opportunity to advance, just because lousy parents..

another factor is as you say, the ideas of easy money by becoming an athlete or a singer, just made a generation of lazy kids who don't know how to earn a wage

It's called cutting payments and bulldozing all ghettos and project buildings.
