I just picked up the marriage certificate today. The certificate only states my wife's maiden name. Does she still go by her maiden name or does she take my last name? There was nowhere in the marriage license where we could specify what name she will take after marriage? What name does she use when she applies for social security?

We just got our marriage certificate last week, it's just the same (with my maiden name) but you can use it as legal document about last name changes.

I just wanna share my experience about the SSN. Don't rush go to SS office after you got your marriage certificate because that's exactly what I did and they sent me back home right away. I have SSN before we got marriage (under K-1 visa and valid temp working permit) and I thought I wanna renew my SSN and change my last name. But the officer there said since I'm married now that means my K-1 visa isn't valid any longer so they couldn't renew my SSN. He told me to go to Boston (nearest immigration office) to change my status to K-3 then go back to SS office to renew my card.

I haven't follow up regarding above issue and just wanna focus in getting my permanent EAD card first at this moment. Anyone has same experience? Should I do what the guy said, go to Boston and change my visa status? It seems confusing for me because I'm applying for AOS, why should I change my status to K-3?

Mine was the same, in my maiden name. I was really confused because I had specified that I wanted to change it. So when I received it and asked them about the name change they told me I would have to go to the SS office to get my name changed. Since I hadn't applied for my SS# at that point I just applied for my SS# at the same time I told them to change my name. No problem (well, except that the first time I went I wasn't in the SAVE system yet, but 2nd visit was fine).

Ok, that just sounds completely wrong. You get the K1 visa so you get married, that doesn't mean you change the visa to a K3 once you are. You obviously apply for your AOS and are allowed to be here based on that pending. I agree with Kezzie, wait for your EAD and then change it. Especially since you already have a SS#. It's not like yuo don't have one and in turn can't open a bank account, etc. As long as yuo have it you should be fine.

They do not change names on the certificate, it just shows you got married to someone on what date.

then you can go to ss office with your marriage certificate to change your name.

When I signed my certificate though, I signed very bottom as My married name though. but i don't think it does make any difference.

I changed name in my bank and everywhere(except driver's license and SS card since I'm waiting for EAD to be approved).

my marriage certificate fortunaly has both maiden and new name (my husbands), i got my ssc with new name, and i asked just for curiousity how do u do that when your marriage certificate doesnt have new name, woman said, when u applied for ssc and u have marriage certificate you can ask for it to have your new name, so i guess thats logic.......the ssc will have a restrictions cos u cant work till you get either EAD or green card

once you have your ssc with new name thats a form of id of your new name.......get your drivers licence after that.

after aos you can applied for new ssc without restrictions......

good luck

Engie, seems like you got a misinformed officer at your SS office...
