I'll have to keep that hotwire thing in mind for the future!

I booked our room last week. We're staying at the Best Western Europa. It is walking distance from the consulate (I think a 10 minute walk) and appears to be a nice hotel- recently renovated, although it is Best Western so I'm not expecting it to be glamorous!

A room with one queen bed was $99 dollars plus tax. I had some points on my VISA card so I booked through my bank and got the room for less than half price even after taxes. I'll write a review after my stay. :)

lol!! Mine didnt have bed bugs!! The Hyatt should be far superior of La tour though.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I get really creeped out about bugs - and I know trip advisor people normally only post bad reviews - so most of the time i take it with a grain of salt

but someone posted an actual pic of a bed bug and their red bumps so i freaked a little =p

glad to hear you didn't have any tho :)

Just wanted to add a review of the two hotels at which we stayed in Montreal:

Best Western Europa

Location: It is close to lots of shopping, so if you like that it has a great location! We walked to the consulate the morning of our interview and the walk was about 10 or 15 minutes.

Parking: There are two parking lots by the hotel. One open air lot across the street costs about $20 per night. We used another lot one block away because it was covered and felt safer. The fee was only $6 for the night, although at the hotel the concierge told us it would be $18... so I don't know if we weren't charged enough? Anyways, our car was safe there and I'd recommend it- called Stanley's Parking.

Rooms: Pretty standard. Our room was small and pretty dark (window was small) but it was very clean. Same with the bathroom. One of the lamp bulbs was burned out and the fan in the bathroom didn't work- so some minor inconvenience, but nothing that really bothered us.

Cost: We payed with Visa points through our bank, but the fee would have been $99 plus tax.

Other: The lobby in the hotel is very pretty! And the concierge at the hotel was helpful and friendly. She gave us a free map of Montreal when we checked in. She showed us where all the good sites were in Montreal as well. View from our window was just to the parking lot across the street- not great but not terrible.

Holiday Inn Midtown

Location: Even closer to the Consulate than Best Western- 10 minute walk max. Seemed to be pretty central to everything in downtown Montreal.

Parking: Valet Parking only which costs $18 (plus tip)

Rooms: Nice rooms. Ours was clean, bright and spacious. You walk in the door and the sink is in a cove on the right while the toilet and bathtub are in a room on the left- makes getting ready in the morning with two people more convenient. King size bed was very comfortable.

Cost: We booked using hotwire.com and our room cost $56 plus tax.

Other: Concierge wasn't as friendly as at the Best Western, but did his job. Our valet was very personable, though. The view from our room was to the street below or to another hotel, depending on which way you looked. Nothing to brag about.

Nice and clean though, that's all that matters to me. If a hotel isn't clean, I'm leaving!!

I'm reviving this thread because I really want to recommend the Hilton Bonaventure! The hotel itself is located on the top floor of the Bonaventure center... Strange, the whole thing is only one floor, but its quite large! Even though we were so far up, we had the feeling we were on the ground, because the view outside our window was a pond inlet located on the roof of the center. There was no water flowing through it, but I can imagine that in the summer is looks very nice. The pool looked very nice too, with a waterfall, and it was open, but It was cold outside... I didn't want to brave it. The receptionist said they have a 24 hour gym... but I was hardly in the mood for that!

Anyone who has stayed in a Hilton knows how grand the Hilton beds are. I was so sure I wasn't going to sleep a wink the night before the interview, but I really slept like a baby and didn't want to get up in the morning  The bed was just so darn comfortable! The room itself was very comfortable as well. The bathroom was spacious and very clean, there was an LCD TV and the room looked very new. Maybe they've recently redone them...

There were some negatives. Even though the hotel was on one floor, there were several spots where you had to go up and down a couple stairs. This was slightly annoying with all my luggage... It only bothered me the morning we were leaving, I was exhausted and grumpy. They also charge you $9.99 for 24 hours of internet service. Its not that bad, but I've never been to a 4 star hotel that didn't provide free internet access...

It took us about 15 minutes to get from the hotel to the consulate, but it didn't seem that far. The VIA rail station is just across the street, and there is a mall a couple blocks north.

There's no way to actually pick you hotel. You pick the area, which in this case is Downtown Montreal and then you are assigned a hotel. You can look at a list of possibilities on www.betterbidding.com. If you compare the amenities to the options, you can generally figure out what you're going to get. People also post what they get and usually there are bunches of certain hotels at certain times that are popular. The hotels that offer a pool are often easiest to guess at because there usually aren't that many within a city that have a pool. We pretty much knew we were going to get the Hyatt, which was what we wanted. We figured it was either the Hyatt or the Sheraton. The hotels are always 'brand name' or top quality, so there is absolutely no chance you'll get a dive. Pretty much every hotel offered on hotwire/priceline in downtown Montreal is relatively close to the Consulate.

My husband and I booked through hotwire.com and we compared the amenities with trip advisor and we pretty much knew which hotel we were getting. We stayed at the LaSalle Hotel and Suites for $61USD/night. The hotel was located about 15 minute walk from consulate and right across the street from the metro. (which was really easy to navigate with Google maps!) There were also three grocery stores within walking distance.

The hotel room had a kitchenette (which was big for us as we were there for eight days), included free internet, access to an exercise room (which we actually went to, once), free breakfast every morning (buffet style) and tv in the room too ( i guess that is standard for most hotels). All in all the hotel was rather clean. It was more apartment stylish but really nice. Staff there were super friendly except one kitchen guy who got mad when people didn't put their trays away from breakfast. LOL
