I booked my stay at the W Montreal, got a great rate $172/night for 3 nights. I expect to stay a few days in Montreal to tour the city since I've never been there. It's also only 0.5 km from the Embassy so that should be like a 5 min walk. I expect it to be all that W Hotels are, nice, ultra-modern and trendy. They are running a special now, if you book 2 nights you get the 3rd free when reserving with any AMEX card. I'm a week away from my interview, very excited and nervous.

Good deal! I didn't know there was one in Montreal. We stayed one night a couple of years ago at the W at Union Square in NYC. It was one of the nicest places we have ever stayed but very $$$. I think hubby paid over $400 US for one night - but it was worth it. And yes they are very tendy - high "cool" factor yet very welcoming.

Hope the week speeds by - good luck at the interview. Nice to see things moving along for others.

I booked the Hyatt Regency for $109 CA a night for 2 nights. Got the deal from Travel Zoo's top 20 email. I think it's pretty close to the Consulate, which will help with the freezing temps for my interview on Dec 10th!!!

Hi,

Hyatt Regency the one at Jeanne Mance St. is close to the consulate. That's where we stayed around 5 - 7 minutes walk. The hotel is clean and nice and have restaurant in the building. There's a starbucks across the hotel but don't open until 7 am or later I think. Breakfast service at the hotel if you want to order I think starts at 6:30 am

You can either take Rene Levesque or St. Catherine. I took Rene Levesque as I feel there's more light on this side compared to the St. Catherine at the corner of the hotel to St. Alexandre as there's construction along St. Catherine. Around 2 block and from the hotel. Do wear something that will keep you warm while waiting in line early in the morning as it can get really cold.

There's coffee, soda and water vending machine up at 19th floor waiting area and another vending machine with chips, cookies, chocolates and candies. I don't think there's coin changing machine around so have some change if you think you might need to purchase something to eat while waiting. There's washroom available on that floor too.

Do go early there's not too many people ahead of you.

I'm another La Tour booker. I don't plan to make a mini-vacation or anything out of it, so all I care about is how close to the consulate I am. I just want to get in, get out, get back, and wait for my visa to be delivered so I can go home.

Always been too much of a chicken to use Priceline and bid on a room or airfare, lol

I stayed at the La Tour back in Dec 2004 it was ok, the room weren't modern, but since I was by myself I didnt care, I was happy that it had a fridge to put my beer in! Now if my wife had come up, another hotel may have been a bit better, make it more into a holiday! My advice on hotels is search the internet and see what price ya get, then phone them!! Many offer Govt rates, AAA rates, even Costco member discounts! I was able to get a room cheaper than what I got quoted on various internet sites.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

We booked our hotel on hotwire for $58. It's a 4 star, close to the consulate. Rather not say which one right now, I'll give a review once I've stayed. I mean we risked getting one a bit further away, but the reviews of La Tour on TripAdvisor weren't great, so we took our chances with hotwire and it worked out nicely

I stayed at la tour--it was ok for me, but if my wife had been with me, probably not soo much, lol Don't get me wrong, it was clean and the staff were fabulous (they can store ur suitcases if u arrive early, or depart late) And it had a kitchenette! But if you want something modern, LA Tour isn't it. My selling point was the fridge to keep my beer cold, and you can see the consualte from the hotel (47 second walk) and there is a timmys close by! But for a bit more $$$, there are other hotels in the area. I got the cheapest rate by calling them directly.

You booked through hotwire... I thought they didn't tell you which hotel it is until the day of.

No they tell you what it is when you purchase - and there is actually a message board where people post what hotels they get and so you pretty much know you're going to get 1 of 3 or 4 different hotels, so you can still plan it all out.

We've booked through hotwire about 4 times now and have stayed at really nice hotels for a fraction of the price. In Toronto for Valentines Day we got the Hilton and the year before we also got the Hilton (the other options on the message board were either the Sheraton, Renaissance or 1 King West, all very nice) and then when we went to Miami we got a really nice inexpensive hotel on hotwire as well.

SapphireDreams,

I hope we're not too far behind you when it comes to our timing of going to Montreal! I've always started the process of trying Hotwire, Priceline, etc. So, I look forward to hearing how your stay was!

You mentined how people make posts about the hotel they use... I'd be interested in seeing those posts! I'm always so wary of what hotel they might put us up in, in some cities.

Thanks!

The hotel is always going to be a "brand name" and when you select a 4* you can't really go wrong and it is really is a lot cheaper. I would totally recommend using Hotwire for Montreal because the city is small, so no matter what hotel you get you will be relatively close to the consulate. Some cities are harder to book through Hotwire, but Montreal is pretty much no fail. Good luck.
