Universal Health Coverage --- Call It Socialized Medicine

Since it seems that 75-80% (rough guess) of people have insurance then to scrap that in favor of a national system is like re-inventing the wheel. All I would like to see is a state run program that only covers people that don't have it available to them. I don't have a problem making sure everyone has access to health care, only an all encompassing, mandatory and overly intrusive federal system. Think of it like the food stamp program. Everyone has a right to eat. But do we see a federal program that feeds everyone just because there are some that cannot afford it? No, we have a state run program that helps out only those that cannot afford it. Health care should be the same way.

If this is going to be run by the government I guess they would have access to my medical records. Kinda scary huh!

Americans are becoming too dependent. To those of you who send your kids to school, I say "Lazy fcukers!" Why don't you teach them yourselves? Be independent and homeschool! To those of you who expect the police to deal with offenders in your neighbourhood, I say "Lily-livered freeloaders!" Get a gun and patrol your own streets, Charles Bronson style! To those of you who wait for your city or town to fix your roads, I say, "Socialist scroungers!" Get a wheelbarrow, a shovel and fix those damn potholes yourself!
   Thank you for that.
All three of those example I should point out are state run. Point made.

So, what are and have the states been waiting for on the health care issue? What keeps them from getting it done?

But as soon as that became available businesses would stop offering healthcare benefits to their employees to save money/increase profits.

Some states are already doing it. MA and CA I think are. Some states have programs for children like IL does. The one place the federal governmet may need to get involved with is getting the states to start it.

Which would then have the states scream for federal funds. What is it with the states wanting to do everything themselves but requiring babysitting by the feds all the time? If the states (not a couple but a significant portion) would grow some balls and play the role you wish they'd play, we wouldn't have this discussion in the first place.

On that we agree. Government sucks, it's just the state government sucks a little less is all.

Gary, question for you (I already gave this scenario but anyway):

Your neighbour gets hit by a car and requires extensive surgery to repair his leg. He has insurance. The leg repair is going to cost 400,000.00. He is only covered for 125,000.00 of this through his insurance policy.

The guy next door to him was hit by the same car, they manage to struggle by living at the poverty level, they have no insurance so they are covered by UHC. No problem, he has the coverage paid for by the pooling of everyones tax dollars, he receives treatment and is now training for the marathon.

Do you not think that your neighbour will be up in arms because as a fine upstanding insurance owner he is not covered under the plan for 'poor' people?

I really wish you would explain to me how the above scenario would work - if you do, I won't mention the scenario again.
