I fund my own healthcare! If you want tax funded healthcare, quit your job. Then you can have what you want.

That seems rather well... dumb to me.

I work. I pay for healthcare. Whether the money is deducted by the govt or I fork it over later to a private insurer the result is the same. Unfortunately the quality of care is not.

I suppose your crystal ball is telling you what the quality of care will be, right ? Seeing the plan hasnt been implemented yet.

Going off my experiences with the healthcare system in both the US and Europe I know what worked the best for me.

As it stands we're talking about a hypothetical program anyway - never said I wouldn't look at any specific proposals, but in general... I'm simply saying that the health system in the UK is preferable to the one here - IMO.

Yep,I just dont know why some people are jumping on this bandwagon when they havent even seen the plan.

Or equally why some people refuse to admit that there are serious problems in this country with regard to the provision, accessibility, cost and quality of healthcare.

I'll read any proposals that are put forward - but again, strictly speaking, I know what system worked best for me.

Americans are becoming too dependent. To those of you who send your kids to school, I say "Lazy fcukers!" Why don't you teach them yourselves? Be independent and homeschool! To those of you who expect the police to deal with offenders in your neighbourhood, I say "Lily-livered freeloaders!" Get a gun and patrol your own streets, Charles Bronson style! To those of you who wait for your city or town to fix your roads, I say, "Socialist scroungers!" Get a wheelbarrow, a shovel and fix those damn potholes yourself!

   Thank you for that.

All three of those example I should point out are state run. Point made.

wow this is still going on?

see what a private healthcare system does. even keeps this kind of stuff on life support...

are you suggesting that a national level health care system would let it die?

Fear mongering over the idea of healthcare managed by government, state or federal would be a big step towards Socialism is absurd. As I've said countless times, often to what seems as a deaf ear, there are some things that should remain private while some things work best as public domain (education, roads, police and rescue, military, libraries, parks, etc).

Public education and roads are partially funded by the Federal Government, which is what I've been suggesting should be done with healthcare as well. Would you be ok with that idea?

That would give the federal government control over the projects so no I would not. It's what is wrong with the education system. The federal government is putting strings on the funding they give to the state. That just encourages waste and favoritism.

For example?

They dictate what subjects are taught, who gets financial assistance ect. I am sure there are a few teachers here that can back me up. The No Child Left Behind is a prime example.

I agree on that part. States should have more say with how best to run their schools, but I wouldn't go as far as doing away with having some Federal mandates in terms of proficiency. You can't have each state setting up radically different minimums of proficiency. Without Federal funding, the states with the lower tax base would not have the money they need for schools.

I'll read any proposals that are put forward - but again, strictly speaking, I know what system worked best for me.

Like I posted in another thread:

1) Require healthcare companies to set a fixed price for each of their healthcare plans. Every one that chooses a particular plan pays the same price as everyone else.

2) Require healthcare companies to accept ALL people who wish to purchase a healthcare plan. No cherry picking only the healthy people.

3) Like liability insurance is required for driving, require all people to at least purchase basic health insurance.

All good starts – but I also think there should be some sort of subsidy to make prescription drugs affordable and uniformly priced. Having one person pay more than another for the exact same thing is ludicrious IMO.

I can't see why any private health insurance company would agree to either 1 or 2. 3 doesn't make much sense either, those who can afford to have one do so now, apart from a few who think they are invincible.

However, any method that is inclusive to all, and provides cover to everyone, regardless of how expensive their condition is to treat, should be looked at of course.
