How sad. It seems that despite being anecephalic, he had a disturb that made his eyes grow too much for his body, which could also be caused by the fact he was born after 9 months pregnancy. That baby was doomed to die anyway, nobody could have saved him, just for being anecephalic alone.

Too bad that woman never had a pre-natal treatment, or she would be prepared for this already, and they could have even had her deliver him sooner and not carry that pregnancy for all 9 months.

I get sad when I see these.

I was in Psychology School for 3 years before switching to Law, and I studied development psychology, in babies and to help mothers who go through cases like that one posted, and I saw too many of these and they´re so sad.

I certainlly wouldn´t want to see this if I was pregnant.

It is really tough for the parents who go through all this as you mention pre natal treatment is rare out in these 3rd world countries..

Bizarre - probably more of these oddities than we realise tho. As for holding it up like that - people are curious and at least that way its all over with fast and the parents are spared endless questions.

A shame yes for sure but obviously it wasn't destined to live, or probably capable of it. I'm glad the parents aren't traumatised at least.

Unfortunately, in rural areas of the Sub-continent women oft come to the hospital only for delivery--the culture is not very conducive to prenatal testing/care.

Also true that many hospitals/clinics in rural areas are not equipped for much testing (though good nutrition information COULD be dispensed--of course, getting the villagers' to actually act on it is another kettle of fish). Some (not necessarily licenced) doctors do have portable ultrasounds--unfortunately, these tend to use such a device for the foeticide trade ().

Looked basically like an anencephalic with no discernible neck.

So, it is possible.

How shocking... and very very sad. Reading articles on the meaning of anencephalic just broke my heart! I could not imagine the pain and the sadness that parents would endure.

That poor child in the above photo may not have been cared for by the community or the parents... but, it is definitely at rest in a better place.
