I am curious what are other people's experiences with getting used to the workplace in the US? I am having a really hard time, it seems like the expectations are so much higher and the pay is lower than in Canada for the same type of job. I am thinking of quiting and looking for something else, but from what I hear it is like this everywhere. In 4 months I got more than 50 different responsibilities, it looks like it is never ending and simply impossible to keep up. My husband is telling me to hang in there cuz it's a governemnt job, but I don't know that I can.

Any advice would be appreciated.

My current job keeps me on my toes. Sometimes I want to pull my hair out - well, what's left of it. But I prefer that over the last job I had where I was bored to death and seriously wondered what the heck they paid me for. What I am saying is that there are jobs on either end of the spectrum. You just gotta work on finding what suits you.

I definitely find that the pay in the U.S. in a lot less than it is in Canada for the same job.

I am being paid $7.00 an hour less than I made in Canada, and I work every bit as hard for the money here. Thankfully, I am only working part-time to give me some extra spending money and to help pay my daughter's college book expenses, so the money isn't as important as when I supported myself in Canada.

Complaining about a part time job that you are doing for spending money? QUIT!

I used to work harder in Brazil. But that's because of higher responsibilities, way higher position.

As for the pay, my husband always tells me when I'm complaining about my job, that I make more money here than I did in Brazil, which is true, but you can't compare the economy of an evolved nation with a third-world country. If I had a similar position here to what I had in Brazil, I'd be making twice what I make, without a doubt.

Hang in there, life is not fair (see, it even rhymes  )

Not to mention of course that in every other civilised country there is mandatory vacation time of at least 2 weeks per year, but not in the US! So not only am I working for less money for a similar position (in my case probably about $15,000 less per year than what I could make at a similar job in Ontario), I have no paid time off for the first year, and only 2 weeks allowed after that.

Yeap, definitely working harder for less here in the South.

And I read recently that Canada is thinking of going to 3 weeks mandatory vacation time. hmph...not fair.

In the UK hubster was a math/special needs teacher of highchool age boys at a very small residential school...

In the US hubster is a math/special needs teacher of highschool age boys and girls at a very small residential school....he got the job within 2 months after arriving in the US

He gets just slightly less vacation(about 13 weeks per year) with about the same pay. He gets a free school lunch, which he doesn't enjoy as much as the free school lunch he got at his last school. lol

Sujeet works less than he did in India, for much better pay here. It matters where you are coming from of course. (The cost of living in India is a lot lower, so they make less.) In India, 6 day work weeks are the norm, with only one day off a week. And horrible commutes in the cities there. And sometimes the hours are longer than 8 hours a day, so they work a lot more hours than most Americans(at least from his job experiences in the same field of work). I think though in India they were a little more open to people taking off for family issues, like marriages or ceremonies, because that is the norm there too. But he gets 20 days PTO a year at his current job here, so that's good.

In Brazil standard work hours are from 8 - 1800, 1 hour lunch, so that'll normally make 45 hours/week. I hated the hours because I don't ever go anywhere on lunch time, so I'd wind up staying in the office for 10 freaking hours.

I think it's easier for people that move here from english-speaking countries to have similar jobs, positions as they were having in their home country.

Our Brazilian staff would love to work only 45 hours per week. I swear, I have not yet managed to get into the office prior to them arriving or leaving after they do. There's been one day thus far where I noticed that the Brazil section was empty when I left. I panicked 'cause I thought I was terribly late. Turned out that there was a holiday in Brazil and they hadn't been around all day.

Even if you had more than two weeks vacation ( which I do), in my case nobody does my job while I am away. I recently took three days off, and when I came back had to work 12 hours days to catch up (non-paid overtime for salaried employees). So in reality, if you have to make up the time, that is not real vacation.
