Hi all,

I'm about to leave for the US within a month.

I'm just curious:

Once me and my fiancee are married, do I get some kind of ID to proof that I'm no longer there as a fiancé? I know getting the greencard after the AOS is filed can take quite some time, so what do I have to carry on me to prove that's I'm in the US legally?

My Dutch passport only has the K-1 visa in it, so that doesn't prove anything beyond being a fiancé.

Thanks :)

You can carry around the NOA and marriage certificate w/ passport if you so choose, but I really wouldn't stress - my now-husband had to go to court for a bar fight, and he was here on an overstayed tourist visa - the judge never asked about his immigration status.

With the Social Security Card you can go and apply for a State Drives Licence, you'll have to take your passport(and I94) along as well since the SSC does not have a picture. Do this process as early after you arrive, since you might have problems if you go within 30 days of your I-94 expiring.

All states are different! Many states do not allow any one to attain an actual DRIVER's license (different than a state ID) without a Greencard OR EAD + SSN. No state will issue a driver's license for 3 months.

Maybe I am wrong but I was not aware that a k-1 can get a driver's license.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

Yes, you're not quite right on that, K-1 can get a drivers licence. I've read quite a few posting on that.

The one I myself have was issued Sept. 10th and has an expiry on Nov. 16th when my I-94 expires. Hopefully my EAD will be near when that one expires so it can be extended.

I know all states are different, but as far as I've read than by far most of them will issue one to a K-1, except for a few oddball ones. Even Tennessee has abandoned their oddball Driving Permit thing and are now giving out regular drivers licences. (From Oct. 1st)

SSN, driver's license, and STATE ID are best ID you can get right away for everyday and everywhere use. For me, it is a little risky to bring with you always your passport with the k1-visa and I-94 on it because you might lost it or might be stolen from you and it is harder to get a replacement of all these stuff.
