Years ago I called in sick saying that I got hit in the face with a potato and now my nose won't stop bleeding.

True a bit though...I did get hit in the face with a potato but my nose stopped bleeding instantly.

I didn't do it very often- I would just say I wasn't feeling well and couldn't come in.

When I was in Junior High School- sometimes I would "conveniently" miss the school bus. The school was across from a major highway and the school did not allow kids to walk to school. I would phone my mom at work and she would say "that house better be clean when I get home."

I rarely call in sick. But I remember during highschool my grandma "died" 3 times. By the end of the year the principal asked me how many grandmothers i had. ^_^

Yeah, having a "PTO" (paid time off) bank helps because you can store your days for real vacation and not feel like you have to finish off vacation time before the end of the year.

PS...best to call FIRST thing in the morning when you're still laying in bed, heavy voice and barely coherent. Or set the alarm, call at like 6am and leave a voicemail....

I've gone years w/o taking sick days. This changed when our baby arrived. I've taken three days this year - two when Nani was sick and couldn't care for our baby and one when both Nani and our baby weren't feeling well. I haven't really been sick enough not to go to work in quite some time. If I need to take time off, my job is flexible enough. On top of that, I have (vacation days, personal days and floating holidays combined) effectively just over 6 weeks a year that I can take off. Eight weeks this year since I carried two over from 2006.

6 weeks? wow! where do you work? do they hire? lol

I like employers that pay employees for unused sick days. Cuts down on the calling out.

The company I used to work in Canada tried that...but unfortunately they weren't generous enough to pay the full amount, they would pay only half of the unused sick days...so a lot of people called sick by the end of the year :P
