HI!

One of my friend has been here in US illegally for past 20 years now he would like to go back to India but the Indian Embassy told him that in order to generate a one way document my friend would need to bring someone with US green card and drivers license to Indian Embassy in NY for witnessing/testemony/signature?. My Friend has ask me to go with him but I am not sure if I should get involved with this matter? Will I be harrased in the future? Would this have adverse impact on my US status? Please help. What is the exact procedure?

Thanks

I would assume that this one-way document is needed because the individual's passport has expired. I cannot imagine how your US status would be affected...

The India Embassy to the United States is located in Washington DC. What is in New York is a Consulate...

YMMV

I would think it would be better for your friend to have a US Citizen act as witness, or even a lawyer.

As said above - it'd be better (for you and your friend) to bring a USC (and perhaps one that is an attorney) to complete this process - I would not want to associate myself with such a matter...

I agree that caution is best in this situation and if you are uncomfortable doing it then don't do it. I think the suggestion that your "friend' should bring someone who has nothing at risk is a fine idea. However, the bottom line here is that is is the Indian government dealing with an Indian citizen and the US government is not involved (nor does it probably care) based on what you have said. The US government won't "meddle" in the affairs of another government's dealings with there own citizen. I would not envision the US government getting involved because they certainly are not going to stand in the way of someone who wants to leave... but I also do not understand though what purpose this "witness" will serve either so don't act on anything I might say........

YMMV

Thanks! all

My concern is that since I have a green card.....I dont want Govt of India harrasing me when I visit India or think that I help and illegal immigrant or somehting. I am sure the Indian consulate will make photo copies of my greencard and things like that....

Thanks
