The fault lies with the intention - you either believe that ALL human beings have a right to basic medical care or you don't.

So you don't believe that each human has a right to live, Charles....that's your choice. However, the reality is that emergency rooms don't turn away people because they don't have insurance...and those costs are added to the premiums that we all pay for. The reality is, we all end up paying for those who can't pay. Given that fact, I'd rather pay for cheaper, preventive care rather than emergency room bills for the uninsured.

Steve, healthcare in no-way guarantees life come on now!

Excellent post, AOS Despair.

And you make a great point about paying for others premiums through group insurance. Every person who engages in risky behavoir/habits (smoking, overeating, dangerous sports, drinking, speeding, etc) is forcing others to pay for their choices by driving up the price of premiums for everyone else.

Nope - maybe we should quit denying that we are all paying our own way when it comes to healthcare.

I didn't say it guarantees life, but it certainly can save lives. Just ask any diabetic.

This is one of my favorite contentious topics. My brother is pretty conservative (and indeed argumentative, but in a fun way), so I've had some experience arguing this point!

It would have been nice to see a post that provided reasoned argument, but hey you can't have everything.
Where's your post containing a reasoned argument? All you've been able to put up are a bunch of suppositions that ignore one very central fact: That any and all government run socialized systems in comparable countries outperform the private system in the US in efficiency. We pay by far the most for the least overall in return.
I disagree with that blanket statement. Some countries may be better, but all? No.

Based on what do you disagree? Which comparable nation has a cost / effect ratio worse than that of the US? Name one and let me see the numbers.

Health care in the U.S. is already "rationed," meaning there is a wait, and there are not unlimited resources. I am fortunate enough to have a generous employer-sponsored insurance plan, and I still had to wait nearly three months to see a dermatologist.

Exactly. As I stated earlier, despite an excellent health plan that includes the vast majority of doctors available, it took me almost 50 phone calls to find one that would agree to see my pregnant wife. Our crime? We moved while she was pregnant so I could pursue an employment opportunity that would allow me to adequately provide for my family and would allow my wife to care for the child we were expecting. The insurance my employer sponsos and heavily subsidizes runs up a bill in excess of $12K for a family of three healthy individuals. Some health care system that is. We would have never, ever have experienced such ridiculous nonsense in any other industrialized nation. Nor would we be shelling out that kind of cash for such sub-standard service.

Your cartoon implied that healthcare is an entitlement, yes? At what point do we help someone who needs medical care even if they can't pay for it and when do we turn them away - in your opinion?

I disagree with that blanket statement. Some countries may be better, but all? No.

Then why do we have the highest healthcare spending in the world?

The spending may be less in other countries but the quality is also less in some of them.

In other news, the earth is round.

Tell me an 'uninsured in the US' story Gary. I'm sure you have one stored up.

In other news the statement I disagreed with was false.

In Gary's world, perhaps.

Why are you here? All you seem to do is to step into a thread and insult, berate, ridicule but never seem to try to have a civil conversation. You may not agree with what I say but you always seem to sink to the level of insults instead of conversation. Do me a favor, if you don't want to have a honest debate or have nothing of substance to add to the discussion then please just butt out. Your getting very tiresome.

Since when are you the post police? Gimme a break.

Give us all a break.

hallelujah
