My mom's friend came to the US in the 1980s, and she got a green card that has no expiration date. At first I could not believe it, but I did in fact see it, and it does not have an expiration date anywhere on it.

So somewhere on some radio station my mom's friend heard that they are going to require everyone with these old cards with no expiration dates to apply for new ones. The new ones are supposed to have computer chips and speed up entry back into the US.

Has anyone heard of anything like this? I don't know if she misunderstood something due to a language barrier, or if in fact it's true. And if it is true, what's the deadline, and would she just fill out the same renewal form like a 10yr card would?

I have heard of this happening, I'm sure it was regarding people from the Caribbean who had GCs without expiration dates. I can't remember where I read this though; I'm sure someone else here will have a.) a better memory and b.) better info! :star:

She heard it was for everyone with GCs without expiration dates... and she's from Poland.

Press Release Permanent Resident Cards Without Expiration Dates Must Be Replaced USCIS Proposes Rule Setting 120-day Replacement Period WASHINGTON—U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced today a proposal to require nearly 750,000 lawful permanent residents carrying "green cards" without an expiration date to replace their current cards.

USCIS published in today's Federal Register a rule open for public comment that proposes to require lawful permanent residents to apply for a new Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551), commonly referred to as a "green card," during a 120-day filing period. The change would allow USCIS to issue more secure permanent resident cards, update cardholder information, conduct background checks, and electronically store applicants' fingerprint and photographic information.

Permanent Resident Cards are issued as evidence of the holder's authorization to live and work in the United States. In August 1989, the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) began issuing new cards with a 10-year expiration date and required residents to apply periodically for a new card. Between 1979 and 1989, however, the cards were issued without expiration dates. These are the cards that are the subject of the proposed rule.

The rule proposes that affected lawful permanent residents file an Application to Replace Lawful Permanent Residence Card (Form I-90) in order to replace their current "green card." The Form I-90 requires applicants to provide current biographic and biometric (photographs and fingerprint) information. Application Support Centers across the United States and new automated filing procedures would give USCIS the ability to process a large number of applications during a short period of time.

In addition to proposing a 120-day filing period, the rule also proposes to remove all references in the regulations to outdated Form I-90 application procedures and correct the title and edition date of Form I-90.

Finally, the rule proposes a mechanism for terminating "green cards" without an expiration date. Under the rule, USCIS would be able to terminate permanent resident cards without an expiration date via notice in the Federal Register. More information on this initiative is available in an accompanying Fact Sheet and Questions and Answers notice.

The proposed rule will remain available for public comment at www.regulations.gov until Sept. 21, 2007. Please visit www.uscis.gov for important information on citizenship and immigration issues.

I should think it is for everyone (note, see LaL's post above), I only mentioned the Caribbean because it was someone from there who was asking. ;)

I know for a fact that I tend to only read the news articles page intermittently, I tend to come straight to the forums.

If this was a question about filing the I-693a I could understand members here being annoyed, we get a lot of those and they do tend to be repetitive. This question was actually about something that isn't that common a query by comparison.

So, YuAndDan, chill out a little, no harm done. ;)

No coldness about it, I was going to post that I read it somewhere too, and actually was searching USCIS for it, when I too noticed the posting on VJ Homepage.

The VJ home page is where I tend to do most of my lurking on the site rather than lower in the forums.

I have a friend from Germany who has been in the US for almost 30 years I think and he had to hand in his green card without expiration date and get the one with the 10 years limit on it. Think he did it a while ago, though... Never asked him about the details.

I too have a friend living in the USA for over 20 years with a "NO Expire card" this post was a reminder of this so I shot her an email giving her the heads up on this.

Does anyone know what could happen if a person with one of these "no expiration date" GC's leaves the US on vacation. Will the GC be considered non-valid upon return? I mean how can they turn away someone who has been living here for 30yrs!

I didn't see a date of by when the GC had to be renewed to the 10yr cards.
