Getting ready for driving in the US

Because I want to make it easy for Bee to put me on his car insurance, I went to get my driver's abstract from the local DSC today. The lady there was really friendly, and I received a printed copy of my abstract on ICBC letterhead on the spot. When I mentioned that I was moving to the US, she asked me which state I was going to. Luckily PA is one of the states that transfers the BC DLs directly to their equivalent (I'm sorry for everyone that has to take the test again :() and she also suggested that I contact ICBC's hotline to get my personal claim record. When I called their hotline, the guy was able to pull my records using my driver's license number, and he emailed me a copy of my claim report.

Now all I have to do is get ready for my first winter in Philadelphia. I'm looking forward to driving a Honda Civic while barely able to peep over Bee's steering wheel

Ya, ICBC was easy to deal with when I was trying to get all my documents.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Sounds like there is great cooperation between the two countries for you Nini! Congrats! Don't feel badly for me. It was annoying at first, but it was a nice confidence booster at the end of the day!

Philly winter driving will need a lot of confidence too! haha j/k

I'm sure you'll do great.

Hehe, thanks guys. The worst part about driving in the winter is my fear of getting into another accident like I did a few Christmases ago. In Vancouver slush and black ice, no less :( Otherwise I'm a really good driver, I swear.

I didn't even know BC had universal auto insurance - I really wish they would implement this in Alberta.

Hi Nini...I'm new to VJ. We are waiting for NVC to send our application to the consulate. Anyway, you will get your DL in the states without having to take the written test or the driving test again. Wow...I guess if I were to visit the LB here in Ontario, they should be able to tell me if I'll be that lucky when I move to IL.
