Desperate Housewives remark about Filipino doctors

It’s been circulating around Filipino blogs about the scene that was shown in the US on Sept 30, Dr. Mayfair told a visibly terrified Mayer that the word “menopause” seems to open a Pandora’s Box for the age-conscious middle-aged woman.

“They hear ageing, brittle bones, loss of sexual drive…” said the doctor who was cut midway from his explanation by an agitated Mayer.

“Before we go any further, can I check those diplomas? ‘Coz, I just want to make sure they’re not from some med school in the Philippines,” she said while searching for the doctor’s records. Watch the clip.

I wouldn't say that's necessarily a racist statement. I think it's a fairly commonly-held belief here that medical schools abroad are not as good as those here in the U.S., whether that's true or not I wouldn't know. I think there's a certain stigma associated with foreign-educated doctors, especially if they are American, the idea being that those who are not "smart enough" to get into med school here in the U.S. will be accepted into a med school out of the country. I don't think that this was a slight against Filipinos, just against foreign-educated doctors in general.

I could see your points, but I guess I take it more personally, being that Jinky was a doctor in the PI and was humiliated at one of her interviews where the woman conducting the interview asked her after she said she had practiced for over 5 years with 6 years of schooling, "...but you don't have any office experience." All she can apply for right now is a dental assistant, but damn she's way the hell over-qualified and that woman was a trade school putz who wouldn't know a quality if she had one.

:( That is terrible because an education is highly regarded in the PI - probably more so than here as for most it is the only way out of dire poverty.

For CA, she'll need to return to school for another 2 years and take board exams to be licensed here. UCLA has a 2 year program for foreign dentists, but she'll need a year just to establish residency. On a positive note, she has had some really positive interviews with dentists who recognize her qualifications and it looks like she can make a decent wage as assistant in the meantime.

My primary doctor back in Nashville was an Ethiopian. He was a doctor when he migrated to the US but he had to go back to school here to be able to practice. He worked a night-shift at a gas station while attending medical school. It's been tough, he said, but in the end all worth it. He is making a living now that he wouldn't have dreamed of over there. It's been a good investment for him.

That's just bad writing. The punchline historically has been Caribbean medical schools because washed out US medical students would go down there for school because of the lower standards (e.g. Granada).

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt
