Hello all

I am interested in getting my police certificate or some sort of criminal record check. I see on the RCMP website that they require you to bring in the paperwork from whatever agency is requesting the record check. I have not yet begun the visa process (K1, my girlfriend is the USC) and don't have any paperwork from anyone requesting a check, I just want to see what it says in advance. Is this attainable? Would an attorney be of assistance here?

Also, I have lived in several different towns & cities throughout my life, do I need to get a certificate from every different place, or is there some kind of "master" check that will have everything on it? It will be a bit of a pain to travel around the province stopping at police stations.

Thanks for any help you can provide. :)

I am in Canada.

if your canadian , you get a canada wide police certificate ( wich meens they search all of canada ,

you dont have to get one from ever city you lived as long as it was within canada)

but my advise would be since you havent started the process yet ,

I would waite to aply for the RCMP certificate untill you get package 3 ,

since the police certificate is good for 1 year ( as well as the medical is good for 1 year )

am not saying that it will take a year till the actual interview ,

but what I am saying is incase you get a RFE ( request for editional effidence ) it can take a while till the actuel interview will be given ,

and nope I dont think you will need a laywer this site here gives step by step instructions and so many helpful people if you get stuck on something , it also has great example forms wich you can use ( i used them and had no trouble and with the help of the knowladge from people here )

good luck Lona

I got my police cert in about 20 min for $50. As per your other posts, I am assuming that you want to get it to see if anything shows up on it? If i was you, I would just get it anyways regardless of the one year time limit for peace of mind. Good luck.

We went to the local police office, who pointed us to the OPP office.

Went there, told them we were looking for a Canada wide search and they had me fill out a form. They processed it, I had no record so nothing further was required (ie; finger prints to send away for a full record). Pid $30 and I was on my way.

I wouldn't worry about it unless you have something which will show up. Frankly - kind of makes you feel like a criminal regardless :)

Thank you for the replies. :) I'm not concerned about the one-year expiry of the certificate, I can get another one later if need be. I just want to know what, if anything, is on it. My main concern was that the RCMP website states that you need to bring documentation from an outside agency (potential employer, embassy, consulate, etc) requesting a police certificate. It sounded like Joe Citizen can't just walk in and get one, he needs a letter from someone else requesting it. Is this not so? I may just head down there tomorrow anyway. Thanks again, this is a very helpful group of people here. :)

I've never heard this being so. If you'd feel more comfortable, bring a copy of what's required from the site to the police, and show this as "evidence" that you need this name check done. I don't know where you live, but depending on where you live, you might want to just contact your local police by phone and find out where you can get this done. You're going to waste a lot of time going to the RCMP if they're not the ones that are going to be doing it.

I lived in Saskatoon and did just that. After getting out to the RCMP, (what a waste of time), I was told, that because I live right in the City of Saskatoon, I have to get my name check done by the City Police. I just asked at the front desk for a "name check", didn't show them anything but my ID to prove I was who I said I was, and they sent the completed check, plus an extra 5 copies, in the mail the next day.

I haven't seen your name before. Feel free to come into the Canada forum for further questions and info.

Welcome to VJ.
