I haven't earned any money since 2003. I know I'm not required to file but had read on here that a lot of people were, just to be able to show Immigration that they did file and that their income was in fact 0.

So, I decided to just file 2006. But after I send it, it dawned on me that I filed 'single' So, I called today to find out how to change that. The guy was so rude and kept saying 'this is rediculous, you don't have to even file, you've created your own problem.' Anyway, FINALLY he put me on hold to find out what I should do about filing single. But somehow it started me back at the beginning and I was back in line to talk to someone. GRRR! I waited some more and finally hung up because I was so frustrated.

So, my question...can I just tell Immigration that I was not required to file because I didn't make anything? Or should I get it straight with IRS and take my tax return to show them in Montreal?

I wish now I would have just not filed at all. This is just a mess!

For those who told Immigration they were not required to file, did you get a letter from IRS stating that? Or did they just take your word for it?

Thanks!

Tammy

So since I did file for 2006, I need to get that fixed since I filed wrong, and just take that in? The guy at the IRS said they could give me a letter stating I didn't file. But since I did just file for 2006, I guess he wouldn't be able to do that now.

I wouldn't fix anything. Write a letter indicating you have no tax returns. You didn't file because you had no income.
