Is receiving RFE's for leaving out blank fields that don't apply (N/A) is a common things for DS230? An example will be Province field (leaving it blank instead of entering N/A). Anybody left this field blank and didn't receive an RFE. There were few people here in VJ receiving RFE's for some silly mistakes in their DS230 form. Is that a common thing or an exception. Trying to figure out what is the pattern here on this regard. Any feedback is very appreciated.

From what I have read recently it seems common. I'm not sure but I think they probably check to ensure each and every field is filled out and if not - RFE.

I have an RFE for my DS-230 on its way to me right now - for not putting To: 'Present' on the work and residence date fields.

I'm sure sometimes they miss some, but I also think it is pretty standard for them to check it for blank fields (same with I-864).

Just my thoughts on it.

I just read your post on "Shouldn't my case be complete by now", and you did not mention anything regarding DS230 form mistake " forgetting to add 'Present' on the work and residence date fields." Was that still among what they RFE'ed you for?

Yes indeed it is. When you fill out the form using the computer and you are doing the date fields, you cannot type in 'Present' - because it is expecting a date.

I knew this when I filled in the form and meant to go back and fill it in manually and forgot to do it. Both fields involved are on my RFE.

In the other thread we were discussing generating our own RFE coversheets - that's why I mentioned the other information in that thread (information the agent didn't mention to me on the phone - all she mentioned was the blank fields).

Hope that helps.

Hi there,

We didn't leave any other blank spaces in the DS-230 - unless you count question 24 - previous Military Service. This is a Yes/No question - so I didn't write N/A in the fields below that as we answered No (but I will when I send this copy back - even though it isn't on the checklist!).

Then again, on the I-864 there was a Yes/No question that we answered but they gave us an RFE for that field, we needed to put in N/A.

Bottom line, if you leave a field blank expect an RFE (unless of course they miss it!).

They send you back whatever you need to make the correction, for instance they sent back my DS-230 part 1 and circled (in red pen) the two question numbers.

Talked to a supervisor and a couple reps and they told me no problem what so ever. I myself asked a supervisor about this before doing it. She told me that they understand that mistakes are made and that whiteout is not a problem.

Any feedback is very appreciated.

hi medieval!

yeah i was RFEd for i left the Province field, since i lived in a city, so i didnt put in anythin in that field. and i gor RFEd for that. RFE in DS230 is common, i think. so never leave any blank spaces.

on the 2nd time, we used a new DS230. And still waiting for it completion.

Good luck to us! :)

Hi Guys.. I was just getting my DS-230 ready and saw your post about RFE's.

I have actually left fields 21a and 21b blank because I am the only one immigrating and my hubby is already there! So should I just fill in N/A?

Thanks ;)

hi hawaiiandreams!

If nobody is accompanying you to US, you should write in N/A in 21a and 21b.

Good luck!

These are the key points that you have to remember on the DS230 to avoid RFE:

** Anything that does not applies to you, write N/A. Do not leave anything blank.

** Always read the questions at least 2x-3x to ensure you understand it clearly.

** The most common mistake is q#1 and q#2 for married women. It is best that you review your actual I-130 and write down whatever you have used on your application for q#1. If unsure on q#2, call NVC and clarify and make sure you take note the name of the person that you talked to from NVC and just place a post it note or attach a letter when submitting your DS230.

** On the addresses to list since when you reach the age 16, never leave any gaps at all. If you are unsure of the month or year, just give them an estimated month or year.

** When filling out your DS230, most of these questions are redundant since you already answered then from I-130. Always check the information to ensure it is the same answer you had then.

** Do not forget to write your case# on top of all the documents you submit with your DS230 forms

These are the only things I can remember for now. These are the same key points I was provided by our NVC gurus. :star:

Good luck to all of you!

 Really good list Rina.

I would only add to double check your date range answers, where you are entering From such and such a date To: - whenever.

When you are filling out the form on the computer it doesn't allow you to type in To: Present (you will have to write this in afterwards) - easy to forget to do that.

Good luck!
